BUT ASIDE from home economics classes, Mayes true form goes miles deeper with her involvement in the school's famed pep club and its cheerleaders. This mother of mothers as some choose to call her, year in and girls in year out leads a 100-plone of the most efficient rally clubs in the state. Then combine that with her leadership of the school's cheerleaders. In all, it takes hundreds of hours from late August to the middle of May, and not so much as a single coplaint from the lady who does it all. THIS GAL, who seems to have a smile for everyone and points to a picture of her pep club and says with a gleam in her eye, "these are my kids, loves athletics. Shes perhaps the best friend that guys like Doug Moon and Brad Haw kins will ever have. Her girls bring some spirit to the games that Hawkins and Moon work so diligently to prepare for. Wildcat Grid Clinic Date Set Weber State College head football coach, Mike Price, has announced the itinerary for the 1985 Wildcat Football clinic, Utahs Best. THE ALL day clinic will run on Saturday, March 16 starting at 8 a.m. The clinic is open to all high school, junior high school and little league coaches and to anyone who wishes to improve upon her football knowledge. Featured speakers include Buddy Ryan, the highly acclaimed defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears which led the entire NFL this past season in total defense, and Homer Smith, the offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins which has one of the most potent offenses in the entire nation on the collegiate level. ALL WITH Coach Ryan and Coach Smith, Coach Price and his staff will also speak on specific areas of coaching and techniques. The Clinic fee is just $10 for the entire day, which includes a continental breakfast, lunch and door prizes. The clinic will be held in the Austad Auditorium of the Val H. SOMEDAY her name will be something sacred like." Mayes grew up in Bountiful, one of four daughters born to the late Grant Freer. THE FREERS had no sons in the family so maybe it wasn't so unusual that Myrna took the place of a son by watching athletic events with her father and developing a competitive spirit and love for sports like any boy would have. 1 As a high school girl myself, was always pretty involved. In fact most of the girls were involved in school activities because hardly THERE COULD be more that go in future weeks in addition to these, but Patt Ott, Kenny Drayford, Mark Adams and Greg Boseman will all be attending the College of Eastern Utah this fall to play football. Ott and Drayford will see a lot of time as a defensive back. Boseman, a runningback in high school, will tryout as a ballcarrier and perhaps as a linebacker on defense. THESE were just a few of the people who helped Clearfield earn a trip into the 1984 state playoffs after earning a portion of the Region One football crown with Box Elder High. year Im asked how in the world do we organize such a responsible group. Ive only got two words for an answer, "Myrna Mayes." The pep club, which maintains from an enrollment of a 00-pl- year in and year out. must maintain certain standards of excellence imposed by Mayes. They attend a gym class once a day and everyone participates. Grades and other things stack up too for the 116 ;a BUT TODAY the kids have so many things yanking at them that its difficult to get involved. Im just happy that weve been successful in getting a group excited from year to year, united together for the same cause. I do it because I generally love kids. If you give them positive things, then they'll give you positive things back. If you treat them like human beings and uphold their respect, then they'll be willing to give you what you want, said Mayes. Maybe its just my kids, but Ive had very few problems with discipline in seven years, she said. MAYES AND Smith and the school in general can take a lot of pride in the two "Outstanding Sportsmanship of the Year awards presented to the school the last two times Layton visited the state basketball tournament. This honor is given yearly by the Salt Lake County Sheriff s Department to the school which exhibits AS SMITH said. "It breaks her heart to say no." When it comes to the administration. Mayes says "there couldn't be a more delightful administration to work for." "They get behind you just like the coaching staff." she said. 4-- A t, sportsmanship better than any other. In both years Layton won the award the judges have marveled by the manner in which Mayes' pep clubs have demonstrated themselves. MYRNA has now taught at Layton for 13 years and has led the pep club for seven consecutive seasons. "It has been harder and harder to keep my energy level up and that prompted me this year to tell myself that we'd cut the pep club down a little.
