It took about 20 hours of careful labor to create the finished art piece. ON AUGUST I. 1984 Richard Myers and his wife went to the Ogden shop of Northern Utah Glass. They were looking fora spe- cial stained glass window that would let light into the chapel from the exterior and yet retain privacy. The mortuary owners wanted something serene and pretty. They liked a mural that depicted birds in llight. the stained Another guide-linglass crafts people had to work with was that the glass was to match the chapel decor. e AFTER THE design was completed and approved. Mrs. Farley and Mrs. Hemsley traveled to Greeley, Colo, to purchase some special hand-mad- e glass from the Western Art Glass Company. This glass is put into a kiln set at 3(H) and degrees. It is hand-dippe- d placed on a conveyor belt to cool. Some of the special glass is hand raked. The finished product is called Optimum glass, it has the special ability to allow refractive light to pass through without using the bold red and yellow colors. The colors used in the stained glass piece are opal rose, blue rose and gray marble. in diameter and Stained glass windows measuring weighing 150 pounds each are being installed in the new Myers Mortuary on Fairfield Road in Layton. six-fe- THERE IS no other glass this color in the world, says Mrs. Farley. The center circle of the window is a hand etching. The glass was first taped completely with masking tape. Birds and pieces of grass were cut out individually in each area that was to be exposed. An exacto knife was used to create the etching. Finally, the glass was sand blasted to make the design perma- nent. ONCE the three women started working w ith the glass it took about two weeks to complete the project. Each edge of the glass was ground on a diamond rotor to allow the glass to expand and contract without spliting. "This is a piece of art that can last more than one generation, explains Mrs. Farley. INSTALLATION was a major part of the stained glass creation process. Most glass companies don't handle stained glass. Evan Adams from Davis County Glass was selected to do the installing because he knows his business, Mrs. Farlev savs. MRS. FARLEY and her sister, LaVee Hemsley, were helping their parents, Shirley and Rachel et o some doors and winCraig, dows in the 100 year old Craigfami-l- y home on Rainbow Drive in Layton.
