Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 12, 1984 The Grommd ! Gm 'Fmdrng Glory By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports It may seem a bit fanciful but take guys like Mike Robinson, Robert Ferneau and Craig Carter and put em in cowboy clothes, start the strap on a cameras whirling and theyll all play two starring roles at the same time. ON OFFENSE theyll' run and snag passes like a desperado who has just cleared out a bank or stuck up a stagecoach. On defense though, they'll be a sheriff handcuffing the bad guys in black hats and generally keeping law and order. That may be fantasy but the things Ferneau. Carter and Robinson do accomplish each week with their respective prep football teams isn't a bunch of fairy tales. IT JUST so happens that these three high school gridders happen to he three of the best offensive football stars in Davis County and aren't too bad on defense either. Davis Mike Robinsn KAYSVILLE One of the workhorses in the Dart football camp these days is senior fullback and linebacker, Mike Robinson. IN TWO games on offense he's piled up 170 yards rushing and is the leader among the Dart backs in that category. But," as Robinson said himself, Ive still got a long ways to go. Robinson, who is Davis answer runto a tough, durable hard-nose- d ner, obtained his initiation to varsity football last year when Jeff Hammer was sidelined with an injury. His brightest moment then was a d performance against the Ben Lomond Scots. 99-yar- WHEN TALKING with Robinson, its quite apparent that all he worries about is how the team is doing. "I'm nothing without those guys, said Robinson who admitted that even though Davis has won big in their first two preseason games, they still havent had a real solid practice or game yet. Its taking us a little too long to get started in games and our practices have been up and down." Maybe its just timing, but something is missing, Robinson said. AS FAR AS running the ball, I believe here that anyone could run it. But without those guys blocking well upfront Id be out of there. I believe my rapore with the linemen is good. After a play is called they (Vaughn) Casdorph or one of them will pat me on the behind and say, Lets go Robby, lets get it. Casdorph, (Jubal) Frost, (Rody) Meacham, (Scott) Ward, (Andy) Neff and all the rest are doing a great job blocking, Robinson continued to say. ROBINSON hasn't always been carrier. The beginning of it all was as a freshman playing under Frank Thompson. There were a few chuckles when he proposed he wanted to run, but it wasn't long before people began taking him serious. a ball With the present group of seniors, Robinson and the bunch have lost only one game in four years of action. They lost by three points to Ogden in the opening game as freshmen and havent lost since, going undefeated as sophomores and juniors. The team did get revenge on that Ogden loss by beating the Tigers later in their freshman year by 30 points. knee. But even though it bothered him throughout the night, Carter piled up 153 yards on just 20 carries, scored three touchdowns and generally was a solid inspiration to his teammates. t vsfT BUT WE want to get better and in time 1 think well start to jell, said Robinson. Craig Carter - Thanks to CLEARFIELD Craig Carter and a visibly better job by Clearfields offensive line, the Falcons have notched one in g' s s THE TALENTED junior had both a nightmare and heavenly vision last Friday night. The nightmare occured only a few series into the game when Carter didnt get up after being tackled. He was holding his knee like it : was worth a million bucks. Luckily the diagnosis was that of a bruised ' J5p, V Jfr ,. THEY WERE all saying congratulations to me, but I told them it wasn't me, it was the offensive lines blocking that won the game for us. It was totally better than the Viewmont game. Thanks to Vaun Waite leading the way on that long touchdown run, 1 was able to go all the way. He leveled two people beautifully. ALL THE guys did a heck of job blocking. Pat Ott, Jeff Folk, Dennis Langford and Kenny Stoker all did great, Carter continued. Just like Robinson, Carter hasnt always been a ballcarrier. He was either an end or lineman but when his speed began to develop there was no way no one could keep him from the backfield. THROUGH HIS sophomore year at Clearfield , Carter was averaging 120 yards per game before he was moved up to the junior varsity and varsity level. Through this year. Carter has gained 228 yards in just two games. e WE HAVENT got this so on weve team, superstars got to play as a team. If we can work as a team and keep one another excited, we could surprise some people, he said. Brent Hancock, who has seen some fine offensive stars in his day, commented, Craig has a ton of ability and is a super athlete. Hes got a lot to learn like running with his eyes and getting his legs up a little, but hes got the tools and desire to become a great football player. big-nam- YOU HAVE to give a bunch of credit to Carter, but don't leave out (Greg) Boseman who is Carters runningmate who did a great job blocking all night, said Hancock. Three of Northern Davis Countys best offensive threats are Davis Mike Robinson, Laytons Robert Ferneau and Clearfields Craig Carter. Laytons Robert Ferneau LAYTON - Robert Ferneau weighs in at 150 pounds, maybe. He might stand at maybe. But e theres just no way to measure this guys intensity level and 5-- 8, dog-gon- determination. FERNEAU, a senior, may very well turn out to be one of the finest tailbacks in all of Region One before this season is over and he'll do by in large because of the little things you cannot measure. But things havent been rosey so far for Ferneau and his Layton Lancer teammates, in fact its truthfully been a nightmare what theyve been going through in preseason. Bountiful shocked them in the closing minutes with a late field goal and no one felt worse than Ferneau who fumbled the pigskin, in a critical fourth quarter. Then last week it was Viewmont who came to play football and before it was over had a victory in their bag and had delivered a ton of bruises to little Ferneau. COACH Hawkins is a super coach and before this thing is over, hell have some things going. Hes maybe the best coach in our region. Our line is still working to get better but the backs that play with me are the best around. Brian (Bailey), James (Batchelor) and (Mike) Roberts do their best to make holes for me, said Ferneau. FERNEAU, who has run the 40 yard dash in 4.6, claims if he didnt love contact he would have exited from the game of football long ago. "Thats what its all about, he said, If Im not bruised up after a game, then I know I didnt give it everything I had. Of course his speed helps to get him away from being totally wiped out. Like Coach Hawkins has said, these are just tune-u- p games in preseason. But he has also said tha we had better start coming around before it gets too late. IM OPTIMISTIC about it, even after Viewmont beat us up so bad, said Ferneau. ...my rapore with the Unman is good. Mike Robinson a...it wasnt me, it wae the line. offensive Craig Carter a...our line will get better. V Robert Ferneau Layton Needs Victory; Darts Meet Falcons - The good WOODS CROSS news for Woods Cross and Layton football fans is that this week one of their clubs will taste victory for the first time this year. LAYTON LOST its opener to Bountiful a couple of weeks ago when the Braves kicked a last minute field goal and then last week the Lancers were handed another setback, this time it was Viewmont who took a 14-- 6 win in a game that really wasnt that close. Meanwhile the Wildcats have been their own worst enemy as turnovers have led to their two defeats to South and then Clearfield. So both sides are in search of that elusive first win and Wildcat coach Larry Eldracher feels the first win is important. We're approaching this game with the idea that we need the win for confidence to go into region the following week. Confidence plays a big role in high school sports and we need some right now and a victory is the right medicine. WHILE ITS true that both sides come into the game at 2 Eldracher isnt so sure they are the same, I dont know about the Layton games and what happened but I do know that we could just as easily be 0 right now. Weve beaten ourselves twice, as coaches were a little upset about that but 2-- we also feel we still have a good football team and with some determination on their part we can get some wins. Layton could have won the Bountiful game but by their own admission Viewmont kicked them all over the field. The score doesnt indicate what really happened offered Laytons first year head man Brad Hawkins, it could have been a lot worse. They kicked us and good. TO BE honest though it really doesnt matter whats happened in the past weeks both clubs are looking straight ahead to meeting each other rather than dwelling on what might have been. first two games and our backs have run well, but we have to work on our handoffs a little. The defense has played well at times but its still spotty and they need to play consistent for us to win. According to the coaches besides the play of Hawkins its been the offensive line consisting of Roger Holgren, Gary Hatch, Rick Hawley, Dave Potter, Chris Kimber Johnson and tight end Rob VanDemerwe that has One matchup in this battle that is played well. These guys will have worth the price of admission by it- to have another effort in self is the showdown between Jeff order for the Catssterling to record their Hawkins of Woods Cross and first win. Robert Ferneau of Layton. Hawkins enjoyed another great evening IN PREVIOUS years this game against Clearfield, once again well has always been a close knock over 100 yards accounted for on down drag out affair and this week offense, while Ferneau is also cap- should be more of the same. Both able of big numbers. Ferneau had a teams and coaches are hungry for a great game against Bountiful but he win but only one will come away did have trouble getting yardage smiling. Woods Cross has beaten against Viewmont. themselves twice now and they just have too much talent to keep doing BRIAN BAILEY is a two year that. One of these games they will starter at Layton and he's just now put everything together and win getting the hang of the new Lancer big. offense while Woods Cross had a fine signal caller in Brad Worthen. Last week the Lancers had some difficulty covering kicks and the Vikes racked up some good return yardage and they better be ready this week because in senior Ron Gomez the Cats have one of the best return men in the area.
