IN 1744, Dr. Alexander Hamilton visited Philadelphia. He summed up in a few sentences the feeling of independence that would lead the colonists to separate from their Mother Country that was miles away and had little in common with the young American settlements. I dined at a tavern with a very . mixed company of different nations and religions. There were Scots, English, Dutch, Germans . free-spirit- and Irish; there were Roman Catholics, Church (of England) men, Presbyterians, Quakers, Newlightmen, Methodists, Seventh day men, Moravians, Anabaptists and one Jew. The whole company consisted of 25 planted around an oblong table in a great hall well supplied with flies. A FROSTED mint delight is the recipe selected to represent Pennsylvania. MASSACHUSETTS is an Algonquin Indian name (Massadchu-es-et- ) ll place. meaning Delaware was the first of the original 13 colonies to ratify the Constitution. Great-hill-sma- IT IS HARD to picture The Empire State as a wilderness with islands and mountains covered with trees. Jasper Danckaerts diary of 1679 describes the woods that were located where New York City now stands. Dr. Danckaerts knew that this settlement of only 3500 people would soon grow and the woods would become only memories. We left the village called the Bowery and went through the woods to New Harlem. ..We embarked early and rode over to Staten Island... The woods are used for pasturing horses and cattle, for being an island, none of them can get off. Each person has marks upon his own, by which he can find them when he wants them. When the population of the country shall increase, these places will be taken up. EVEN TODAY wooded areas of New York are noticed and honored.
