AS OF July 1, the state of Utah has mandated that approved car seats must be used by all children two years and under when riding with their parents. In the interest of child safety, and to help parents observe the new law, St. Benedicts Hospital is renting car seats that meet stringent federal standards. The approved car seats are rented for $15 for one year or until the child is 20 pounds, whichever comes first. After Ms. Hansen demonstrates correct car seat use, she requires that parents demonstrate back to her that they understand the procedure. Ope of the hospitals goals is seeing that every newborn leaves St. Benedicts in a car seat. Says Ms. Hansen, "Its a fact that over 95 percent of all babies make that first ride home from the hospital in their mothers arms. TO APPLY for a seat, come to the center for High Level Health, located in suite 360 of St. Benedicts professional building. The center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, a volunteer is on duty every morning on the hospital's 5th Unit to explain car seat use to new parents and arrange for rental.
