Show 1 DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, JULY 18, 1984 Eatery Not Needed , Officials Contend - LAYTON The Utah Association (URA) will press the states new governor to eliminate the increasing number of businesses openly competing with existing private firms, with a major target being the planned public restaurant at Layton High School. for Res-tauia- nt ITS HARDLY faircompetition government-supporte- agen- d cies to set up business to compete private comsays executive director Ron Morgan. Its absurd for a t onipuny to pay taxes only to have .hose same taxes fund an enterprise to lure away its customers. Unfortunately, this practice is spi ending under the guise of training, and Gov. Scott Matheson has turned a deaf ear toward our protest. against panies, g THE LAYTON High restaurant is a perfect example, he says, in a URA news release. If the Davis County School District were really interested in training students for the industry, then they could have worked hand in hand with our members in the Layton area. A professional restauranteur would have welcomed such an food-servi- el fort and would have eagerly pro- vided expertise at an existing job site. Instead, tax monies are being used to purchase expensive equipment and renovate a classroom area for a competing restaurant. Even more irritating is heir policy that students will not be allowed to enter the restaurant during luncheon hours because it nt would compete with the cafeteria. School officials don't want to compete against their own program, but they feel it is tine to compete against private restaurants. SUCH PRACTICES are not only confined to the restaurant industry, he says. "Vocational programs such as graphic arts often have competed against local printing firms. Little has been said in the past, but our assocation feels strongly that the practice is getting out of hand. The URA has sent an alert to other business associations and we are picking up support throughout the state. A LOCAL restauranteur and former president and chairman of the n board of the URA, Hersh lpakt-chia- ressays the school-operate- d taurant will not effectively compete against private firms but that the restaurant idea is foolish and costly. "At a time when the education establishment is crying for the need of more money, it is ridiculous that tax monies are being spent on such a venture, he says. It wont hurt our sales necessarily, but as a taxpayer it certainly hurts our pocket-book- s.
