Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, DECEMBER 5, 1984 Hinckley. Hes a letterman from last season and the younger brother to Nate, who finished as a state champion last year. Hinckley Wrestling was gliding right along last weekend in Layton until he met Clearfields Merrill Johnson in the and lost, 0 in overtime. Dickson expects Hinckley to bounce back. The experience and number of wrestlers competing gets a little more concentrated in the upper weights. At 138 Davis will have Robert West (senior). Hes a returning letterman who won two matches and lost two last weekend at Layton. DUNCAN Journal Sports Wrestling in northern Davis County has never let the rest of the state down in being competitive will not be any diffeand 1984-8rent. AFTER last weekends prep tournament at Layton High, at least kids like Davis Justin Julan-deLaytons Brent Higgs, and Clearfields Gene Smith, Merrill Johnson, Todd Kopecky and Dennis Langford proved theyll be contenders for the big casino come February when state meet time rolls around. The following is an preview of Davis Countys three northern most high schools. 5 r, early-seaso- n DAVIS HIGH KAYSVILLE Julander, to say the least, learned a bundle from the graduated Shawn Robinson. Now Robinson is a Weber State grappler but he still comes friend back to coax his along. All of this helps to make Julander a top contender for bragging rights in wrestlings lightest category. JULANDER, a junior, started getting some confidence last season and it looks like it' s paid off this season as he won top honors at the Layton High Invitational last weekend. But you can bet Coach Jim Dickson wont let Justin rest on that laurel, but will have him working harder for the next big tournament. Following Julander at 105, 112 and 118, are Gary Green (junior), n Steve Price (sophomore) and All are Arbon (Sophomore). young as indicated and Dickson hopes theyll blend well into his program. THE DARTS have a move-i- n Derek Everson, at 126. Hes a senior who bowed out of the Layton tournament fairly quick. One of the Davis High team Bruce tains will be Tar-ro- ANOTHER move-i- n comes in at 145 in Mark Anderson (junior). Vaughn Casdorph probably wait for another major tournament after his poor showing at Layton. As a senior and a team captain hes a much better wrestler than what showed there. Casdorph is aggressive, as was proved in football, and with continued improvement in technique his winter could be a fun one to cover. MIKE Anderson is at 167 for the present but is trying to move down to 145. He presently only weights 155 pounds. Hes a junior who won one match last weekend. Blake Hart was a pleasant surprise for Jim Dickson over the weekend. The junior took fourth in the Layton tourna- cant 185-pou- ment which was his first varsity tournament ever. THE DARTS dont have to look too far for their heavyweight as Rody Meacham comes back for his final year. He finished fourth in the Layton event but his competitiveness will probably see him finish much higher in future tournaments. The Darts are the defending Region Four champions and Dickson knows all too well that if his school wants to keep the title in Kaysville, theres a bunch of hard work and improvement that must take place. The Darts finished in eighth place last weekend compared to View-mon- ts 10th place ranking and Bountifuls 15th. Clearfield. Smith learned a lot wrestling behind the eventual third place finsih-e- r and he showed a little of what he learned last weekend by capturing the title at 105. Smith had two pins en route to his impressive victory in the finals. Hes got the ability, said Tennis. Clearfields 112pounder looks to be a move-i- n from Idaho, Steve Cragun. Back this year at 126 will be Aaron Flint who quit the team last TOTAL A accompanied with a great attitude all of which helped him place third at 126 last weekend at the school. Aaron ended up beating Troy Penz of Morgan in the consolation championship. We like what we see from Aaron so far, said Hansen. son's year, THE DARTS have the quickness but their apparent lack of size proved to be the downfall in the loss to Judge. On both the offensive and defensive boards, the Bulldogs managed to get five or six shots to Davis one. Despite Judges big kids, I thought we played fairly well in the first game. Taylor had a great night offensively, Casey Lloyd had an average evening offensively and the rest of the kids battled hard, said Gardner. THE DARTS were down by just four points with 4:01 left in the game before Judges strength under the boards began to take its toll. At times Gardner had Taylor, a guard, guarding Judges Holmes who is the Bulldogs big center at defensive All the mix-uassignments worked however, as Holmes was held to just nine points. The Darts will do what they have to do to keep the opposition under control, despite their lack of size. 6-- 8. p Lancers - LAYTON Theres a bunch of abtalk this basketball out the strength of the Bonneville Lakers in Region One. Kopecky gives Clearfield some high hopes in one of the states toughest weight divisions. PLACING fourth at 145 for Clearfield was Mark Martinez who overcame some first day jitters to come back very respectively the second day of the Layton tourney. The eventual champ, Brent Higgs, only beat Martinez by a 1 score, Martinez may have more natural ability than any other Clearfield wrestler. There is no question that the Darts will have gone through a schedule of prep teams by the time league begins. On Tuesday of this week they were to have played the Ogden Tigers, winners of last Saturdays Laker Clas wanted to, but the kids hustled and were aggressive. Weve got some refining to do, but its very early, said the coach. THE FALCONS have four main guards this season and last Friday night Coach Hansen started Mike Call and Darrel Hicks. Hicks ended up with 12 points in his first varsity start. Mark Adams and Eric Murray both saw plenty of action too. The Clearfield forwards were led by Troy Markham who finished with 16 points. Eric West was the other starting forward who finished the game with 10 points. The other forward who saw some playing time was Kehny Ashby. THE BIG kids who played in the win over Murray were Tom Dobins, Dusty Parry and Rex THIS FRIDAY the Lancers will host Kearns. Then next Tuesday theyll host the Davis Darts.
