Show SEPTEMBER 9, 1986 . WX 14-- 0 Shut-o- ut Falcons defensive tradition lives on By TOM HARALDSEN CUPPERPAULA Two things WOODS CROSS became clear during Clearfields 14-- 0 victory over Woods Cross Friday night: both teams have fine defenses, and both teams need to find more offense. In a game that threatened to end in a scoreless tie (barring the overtime, of course), Clearfield finally broke through on just one series, completing three key passes en route to their first score. The Falcons added some frosting on an exciting 80 yard touchdown run by Monte Geertgens in the games final minute. But before all that happened, this contest was an exciting, hard-fougmatch between two teams still trying to muster some offense. HUFF CLEARFIELD QUARTERBACK TIM Gardner (6), rolls out for a pass during the Falcons 14-- 0 victory over Woods Cross Friday night. Gardner finished with 8 of 13 completions in leading Clearfield to its first victory. In pursuit for Woods Cross are Joe Cahoon (52) and Eric Watters (29), while Nate Chandler (74) and Brett Wiggall (59) of Clearfield look on. ht The Wildcats, under first year coach John Haning, were clearly the superior team in the first half. Clearfield literally was held in check, earning their only first down on a 35 yard completion from Tim Gardner to Bracken Larsen as the first quarter ended. But the tough defense that Woods Cross has shown so far this year against the run came through again. Clearfield failed to score after driving to the Wildcat 10, and would have no other threats in the half. Woods Cross, on the other hand, got no deeper than the Clearfield 38. They had one drive stopped on the Falcon 40 when junior quarterback Steve Worthen suffered his only interception of the game, but COACH JOHN DAWSON kneels beside the core of his 1986 golf team that has Davis the second High on top of the league. Chris Turner and Brett Henderson. the contest remained deadlocked at the half. In the third period, the momentum seemed to shift. After both squads failed to score on their opening possessions, Clearfield began a 60 yard drive on its 40. Gardner hit Geertgens with a nifty 3 yard gainer on a screen pass to 1 the Wildcat 29. Geertgens picked up two yards on a carry then Gardner hit Darrin Starkey with an 1 1 yard pass to the 16. Two plays later, Gardner connected with Geertgens again for a 10 yard completion to the eight. Andy Shavers then galloped to the one yard line, from which Gardner scored two plays later. Larsens PAT made it 0 with 4:06 7-- left in the third period. Woods Cross made its only, real offensive miscue after the ensuing kickoff, as the Wildcats fumbled and lost the ball on second down at their own 17. Shavers rushed for six yards, and Gardner picked up two more to the 11, but a holding penalty on third down pushed Clearfield back, and an apparent field goal attempt on fourth down never materialized when the snap was fumbled. It was late in the fourth quarter when the next scoring threat by either team occurred. Woods Cross recovered a Clearfield fumble at its 42. Worthen rushed for three yards, then hit Bryan Montgomery for four yards. After Eric Watters was stopped for no gain on third down, the Wildcats went for it on fourth and 3. Watters, showing the speed that should make him a c&BS (EfjLJ threat the rest of the year, broke outside and rambled 2 yards to the 1 Clearfield 30. After an incomplete pass on first down, Watters picked up eight more to the Clearfield. 22. He moved to the 21 on third down, bringing up another critical call on fourth and one. The Falcon defense rose to the occasion, stopping Spenc Egan just inches short of a first down. It looked like Woods Cross might have another chance to tie the game. Clearfield was faced at its 20 with with a third and 1:15 left. The Wildcats had used their final timeout and figured to get the ball back if they could stop the Falcons. It was here that Geertgens broke into the secondary, juked to the outside, then outran defenders for an 80 yard TD. Larsens PAT ended the scoring. 1 1 The game showed vast improve- ments by both teams following opening game losses last week. Gardner was 8 of 13 for 12 yards with no interceptions, while Worthen showed improvement in completing 8 of 20 tosses for 95 yards with one pick. Geertgens rushed times for 95 yards to lead the Falcon attack, and caught four passes for 51 yards. For Woods Cross, Ron Hales rushed 10 times for 84 yards, and Watters added 27 yards in nine carries. This week will find Clearfield hosting Davis, while Woods Cross will stay at home to take on Layton. Still the Ben Lomond offense could do nothing and were forced to punt. Starting at Ben Lomond's 46 yard line, the Darts continued to haunt the Scots with their ground attack as Stoddard just kept getting better with each play. Then with 5:01 remaining in the first half a Davis player found an opening around the left side and sprinted 29 yards for the game's third touchdown and a 21-- 0 Davis lead. The only score of the second half was a brilliant 39 yard touchdown run by Warden, who must have drug at least six Scot defenders on his back the last fifteen yards. We as a coaching staff saw them play against Woods Cross Friday night and we were impressed. Theyve got some big people that well have to contend with. The Falcons appeared to have gotten better as the game wore on at Woods Cross and Dickson said they gained his respect. 52 Restaurant listings 37 Automobile Repairing ft TEST YOUR DRINKING I.Q 1.
