For the first time in seven years they failed to make the prestigious state tournament. That was last spring. This spring they want to repent and land one of the coveted spots again. 4-- A AT THE mid-poiof the season, Bitner and his troops were 2 and tied with Viewmont for second place in the Region Four standings. Woods Cross stood atop the league with a 0 record. Bountiful and Highland were both 3 and East was winless at Our goal right now is to get back into the tournament. said Bitner early this week as his club prepared to meet Viewmont on Tuesday in a very key league bat3-- 5-- 2-- 0-- tle. "Winning the league title would be nice, but its not the most important thing in our minds right now. DAVIS beat Viewmont in their first league game but since that time Viewmont had won three of four games and as Bitner said, turned into a powerhouse. The Darts earned a second place tie with the Vikings last Friday by to beat East 2 in overtime. coming-from-behin- d 3-- THIS FRIDAY the Darts play host to Highland, which besides Woods Cross is the only other team Bitner is fond of his '86 gathering and believes theyve got what it takes to land one of the three playoff spots in the region. ITS A unique bunch &f players. he said, There are at least nineteen specialists, kids that play only soccer. The other nine have participated in at least one other to defeat them. At Highland in the first round of the schedule, the Davis High team thought theyd take a trip to the beach and were down 1 at halftime. They never could overcome that deficit. 2-- Sports Dunks the people who make it have gotten used to preparing to play in adverse conditions and generally are just a little bit more mature in their game preparations. BUT OVERALL I believe our kids are getting tougher mentally, its just taken some time." Bitner also said his team was young, with at least three sophomores playing at various times. Two of those sophomores start for Bitner and they include Blake Wilcox at one forward spot and Ted Donaval in the goalie spot. Robby Jacobsen is the other sophomore who comes off the bench. BUT TO go along w ith the youth and sometimes some lack of mental toughness, the Darts have folks like Kyle Knowles and Blake Hart who fill up most voids pretty quick. Knowles you might remember was the place kicker on last falls football team that finished second in state. Kyle was the one who confidently split the uprights with no time remaining to beat Mountain View in the quarterfinals. HES BEEN a tremendous team leader for us, said Bitner. He communicates well with the rest of the kids and does as much teaching out there as 1 do, if not more." Knowles usually fills up the middle halfback position but is always the guy Coach Bitner goes through to make any changes. Knowles is one team captain and the other is Hart. Through the season so far. Hart has been the strong motivating force." Hart played one of the running back positions last fall in football and eventually went on to become an happen, not the CURRENTLY Clements holds the best record among her teammates in the 800 meters run with a best time of 2: 1.76. She has the second best recording in the 200 and 400 meters, second to Lucky Ikoh a talented WSC teammate. Clements is also a member of the schools 4x800 relay which has the school record of 8:57.44 set back on March 28. Stephanie is also a member of the 4x400 relay and the 4x100 relay at Weber State College. just keep up the good work Stephanie. For the first time in several years, a Weber State College football team will not feature any former players from any of the three northern Davis County high schools. BUT DESPITE the absence of local talent, head football coach Mike Price says his club has established themselves in the league and there might finally be light at the end of the tunnel. Said Price, in preparation for spring training drills which got think we have established started on Monday of this week, ourselves in the league. The program has come from the bottom up to the middle and I feel we are ready to challenge the upper Eschelon. We now have players who have experienced that success for two and three years and they are eager to climb all the way to the top." 1 EVEN THOUGH there will not be any players represented from Clearfield, Davis or Layton, the southern end of the county is represented well. This year's roster features Paul Hawks, a linebacker from Viewmont; Mike Kattleman, a defensive tackle out of Woods Cross and finally Mike Lee. a linebacker who comes from Bountiful High School. Photo by Keith Duncan SENIOR Danny Lattin has picked up right where he left off last season and Bitner couldn't be more pleased. Hes been so much more intense and is just right for the stopper position. There are times that he'll literally just make up his mind to take the ball away from someone and go out and do it," said Bitner. Two more contributing factors to the club have been Mike Reid and Brad Richins who both take up some outside positions with this team. These guys have developed as the year has progressed, both have deceptive quickness. THE DARTS look to have w hat it takes to finally get back to familiar territory, the state tournament.
