Why Commissioners add their blunders and tremendous costs on Special District Citizens? humorous look at serous topics Leave Me Alone CYCLOPS Guest Writer started with a truckload of manure. Debbie Hugoe of West Bountiful had placed a classified advertisement in the Clipper advertising a truckload for $50. Since I'm not an expert on manure futures, I dont at any rate, she soon know if that was a bargain received a telephone call from an interested customer. The man asked a few questions about the manure (and since Im not an expert on manure quality control, I havent the faintest idea what he could ask), but he soon shifted the subject. You know," he said, if you havent sold that manure yet, I know how you can sell it quickly. "How?" asked Debbie. "You could advertise in Happy Ads," said the man. And it became clear that the caller was not interested in purchasing manure; instead he was a classified ad salesman trying to sell his advertising space. Debbie thanked the man for the call and said she was not interested. A "Clipper" reader eventually bought the manure. A month later Debbie again placed an advertisement, this time for a truckload of top soil. And once again the same man called. He gave her the same speech and Debbie once again thanked him and hung up the telephone. Two weeks ago Debbie placed another ad, this time selling a used Chevelle (which erroneously appeared in our columns as a used Chevette). And the man called again. "Im interested in that Chevette," the caller said. Debbie told him it was not a Chevette, and the man instantly became interested in the Chevelle. She recognized his voice and let him ramble on with a bunch of dumb questions. But when he told her he knew how she could sell it d ten seconds later he called quickly, she hung again. "We must have been disconnected, he said. "No, we weren't disconnected," she told him. 1 hung, up on you because I don't want to be bothered. I'm waiting for a legitimate buyer to call, not another salesman. And Im not interested in your newspaper either. Debbie was angry and called the "Clipper office. We told her there was nothing we could do since the U.S. Constitution says nothing about forbidding unethical or idiotic telephone calls. If idiotic movies like Porkys Revenge" are protected then idiotic calls are protected, too. But in a sense of fair play, I have a solution. What I proposed is to publish a classified advertisement in the "Clipper" which reads: "Subscriptions to "Happy Ads only $1.25. Every new subscriber receives a free trip for two to Paris, France with complete paid airfare and three-niglodging at the Paris Hilton. All meals at the swankiest restaurants included along with complimentary escargot at each meal setting. For information about this free $4,000 travel package, call "Happy Adds. "But no one would believe such an ad!" said Diane, our ad representative. "Rational people wouldn't," I answered, "but the idiots would. And you can imagine the number of idiotic calls their newspaper would receive. "Happy Ads would become more popular than the Readers Digest." "But what would it solve?" she asked. "Well, their telephone lines would be so jammed with potential subscribers, some of whom would already have purchased French language learning tapes, that the poor salesmen wouldnt be able to call Debbie Hugoe ever again. She could advertise manure all she wanted and not be harrassed." The "Clipper" turned down my idea saying it was theyre correct. But it would prove a point. If like me youve been woken from a sound sleep by you're stuttering Amway salesmen and disturbed in the backyard by callers offering a free thermos bottle if you'd drive 140 miles to see some bleak resort surrounded by boulders and that only solves cows. The only revenge is to hang the problem temporarily. My solution is much longer-terIt all price--bu- DAVID ROWE t, up--an- ht up--b- ut AFTER THE assembly program, Judy explains the purpose of visitng schools and talking to students about drug and alcohol problems. "There are so many un- - Parents Need Help Wanted: Youth Drug Facilities As a parent ofa chemically dependent youth, I have learned what it is to literally crawl to hell and back on year hands and knees to get help for your child. On March 11th of this year, our son, rather than be separated from his drugs, chose to leave home and take sanctuary with the dealers who had become more important to him than family or real friends. In trying to get help in getting him back, I worked with close to a dozen agencies who all had the same story to tell, UY would like to help you but we cant because have a police record and the runaway laws no longerpermit our he do: intervention. For eleven days our son was on the streets in West Valley and finally with the assistance of Senator Jack Bangerter and Governor Bangerter (Im told) The Utah State Department ofNarcotics and the CityofWest Valley Police Force put enough pressure on the people involved in sheltering him that they sent him home with the admonition to wait until he is . 18 to come back. We got back a total stranger, a boy with an earring in one ear who was saturated with drugs of every description; a boy who was angry and bitter, whose every other wor d was filthy, who was totally irrational in his thinking processes. Because there is not a youth lock upfacility in the state of Utah where a child who is chemically dependent can dry out or receive psychological and medical help other than the already overcrowded St. Benedicts program and because our son did not have a record and was over 16 which according to Utah law requires voluntary treatment, not forced or parent imposed, we had quite a struggle with this stranger in our home. We enrolled him finally in Lou Hancocks Day Spring Voluntary on the Inisis if he wanted to live at home, he was required logo. Afiler two weeks, he flipped out and threatened suicide, and left. We had him picked up by the Murray Police who took chances detaining him and Lon 's staff helped us get him into the psychiatric unit at Pioneer Valley until we could plot a course of action. We now have him at Provo Canyon Boys School which operates under a private school loophole in the law. They, though, do not have drug counseling trained personnel on their staff although they do have very competent psychologists. In becoming involved with experts m the chemically dependent field, we now know that without drug and alcohol training, the psychologists sometimes do much harm to the patient and family out of lack of understanding of the psychological profile mated by chemicals in the body. We are now working with the staff of the school over this concern. Treatment Center There are literally hundreds of parents in the state who are dealing with chemically dependent children and no facilities available. The wealthier send their kids out of state to other overcrowded programs in other states. Some programs take advantage of this need and charge unreal prices for their sendees. At the PRIDE conference $14,000 per month, a price in were told of programs costing as much as which sounds unreal. The poor and middle income families in some instances watch their children slowly die on chemical use. People I know who are good law abiding citizens are visiting their children in penal institutions, a heart breaking But what if the salesman actually wanted to buy the manure?" asked Diane. "Telephone salesmen dont buy manure," I answered. "They wallow in it." IS A Continued from page one controlling his whole life. Jerrys decision to seek help was voluntarily. "But when it starts controlling your life, then its time to seek help. NON PARTICIPATING Cities were against the plant for reasons listed. It also involved a principle of right and wrong. The Commissioners have misrepresented information, broken promises, violated Constitutional rights of Citizens, acted on theirown without City consent. Non participating City officials understand that it becomes necessary to take a stand against these wrongs. Once you except such standards you live with them. The rules of Politics should be as fair as baseball. Baseball is a game of fair unchangeable rules. Three strikes and you're out is a rule even our Commissioners cannot change. Commissioners, you have struck out more than the rules have allowed. WHY DO we still have a garbage plant? Why aren't you willing to tell citizens you borrowed $54.7 million on nothing, for without landfill control and large city participation thats what you did. What methods are you adopting to further divide the county to try and gain control? The citizens are getting wise. We think its realistic public confession time. Ken Reed Clearfield Trapping Has Place On the subject of trapping, I would like to add my two cents worth: first to agree with Leigh Engeibrecht in her convictions, and second, to help her to see the correct aura the trapping profession has created for itself. GOD PUT all the creatures on this earth for one reason or another. But he put man amongst them. This upset a balanced livelihood that cannot exist in any form of harmony. The elimination of some animals is necessary. But not the extinction of any one, or more, certain breed of animal. THE WOLF in my mind, is a majestic beast, with proud heart, and the keen intelligence God gave him. Without this wolf, Mother Nature, and man as well, would suffer greatly. THE MOOSE, caribu, rafcbits and more, would become sickly and feeble, and unsightly. The wolf eliminates the aged, crippled, and the stragglers. We would be overrun, right into city hall, by mice, moles and lemmings, and such, if the wolf did not balance his annual diet, as well as worm him self, each summer, by devouring no end of these small creatures each summer. THE HAIR and toenails serve as a wormer, and intestinal cleaner outer. The smart wolf knows this. The problem is, he developed a liking for lambs, calves, pigs, and even poultry. SO, THE wolf, like all other animals, must pay man the price for his very existance. I do not like this arrangement. BUT, TRAPS are a barbarians w'ay of playing the great equalizer. Yes. Traps are forgotten, lost, or just plain ignored. These traps, and snares too, will lay and wait for a hapless mother grouse with a dozen babies, or a big mother moose with a pair of twin calves. That usually will mean 13 dead grouse, and possibly three moose done away with. SOME SAY hunting is illegal from an airplane, but it is far less suffering to the animals. I have spent a lot of time studying nature, and wildlife. Whenever you see a wolf, a moose, a fox, a rabbit or a mink, or any of Gods other creatures, they are there for a reason. Like anyone who lives in a city, is where he is for a reason. OUT IN the habitat of the animals, man is the destructive intruder. Man is the greatest reason for the unbalance of the animal kingdom. In my opinion, if a man takes a gun, and manages to shoot an animal for that hide, or to protect those sheep, then more power to him. A successful search, a true shot, and a quick kill, is acceptable, I believe. THERE ARE also several other ways of animal control. But, Leigh, I put traps second for cruelty. I have seen too many very large treble fish hooks hung in a tree, baited usually with fresh meat, for the lynx, bobcat, fox, or other hungry animals to leap to get, fight, or hang, or try to climb the tree until dead. I WOULD be glad to help you stop the setting of steel traps of any kind. But, Leigh, cows do lay down to give birth. Unless, of course, man is there to interrupt again. George A. Hall 1 |
