ChmmUs Im A Cbm M By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD is a - Maybe a and we should just leave it at that, but in the case of Stephanie Clements, when Clearfield High says goodbye to her in just a few days from now at graduation, it will be the sincerest of parting of ways. good-by- e second in the 100 and 200 meters and anchored a respectable mile relay quartet. It's time to let go for awhile. good-by- e FOR THREE years Clements brought distinguished honor and good will to the school as she graced nearly every oval track from northern tip of the salty lake to the far reaches of the Grand Canyon and the Great Southwestern Showcase. MOST SENIORS try to do everything they can their last year in high school, but when its over, the mental breakdown and relaxing is very welcome. Im glad to be graduating but Im sure the coming months and years will give me time to reflect on all the great things that happened here. STEPHANIES senior year not only included track and field, but things like running for Miss Clearfield, keeping up a very respectable GPA and being involved in every school function possible. Clements as a female runner, wasnt just en ordinary dress-eup and type person. She had the word competitor spelled on the fibers of her heart and if her time today wasn't better than yesterdays, then it was something like a disgrace to her. m SHE CAME to Clearfield High from North Davis Junior with a lot of natural ability, but in her own JUST ANOTHER day on the track and another fine finish for Clements. natural ability alone words, doesnt make it. She stated further, "Its a lot of hard work and determination the separates the good ones from the great ones, no matter what kind of natural stuff people have. e treated track as a at of Instead flipping burgers job. I The Falcons wont forget her. Theyll remember those dramatic victories she amazingly pulled off in relay races, her complete dominance of the come-from-behi- (400 meters), the performances that brought her numerous MVP awards and they might remember her disappointments if they knew her well. quarter-mil- e CLEMENTS was a blue-chi- p female athlete, nestled in the same class as other former Falcons like Jackie Beene, Karleen Peart, Laura Zaugg and others. Being beaten in the 100 and 200 meters by Webers talented Its a family of six daughters, something Stephanie feels is fortunate because as she said, If wed had a brother he probably would have got all of the athletic though, medals, getting got the two-tim- junior, helped the mile relay team win the state as a junior, was a Outstanding Female attention." two-tim- e Athlete at the Davis District, gda-vi- s High Invitational and was the Outstanding Female Athlete at the Weber State Invitational this past spring. THE CLEMENTS have a big yard in West Point and as kids theyd try to beat dad in races, even though hed run backwards to give em an edge. Hed even ride a bike and wed try to catch him, remembers Stephanie about the younger years. Robert never really participated in athletics until his senior at American Fork High year School. But after just one year he ended up taking third in state that year in the hurdles. Sheryl, the full-tim- e mother, had a mile between school and home each day and admits she ran it very easily. COLETTE AND Natalie have already graduated from Clearfield High while Stephanie and Rachelle Badoni (An Indian sister who has lived in the Clements home for eight years) graduate together this year. Rachelle is the up and coming runner who enters Clearfield next year and who is right on the heels of her older sisters times. And finally comes Melanie, the youngest. The first competitive race that Stephanie ever competed in was in the seventh grade. She ran a 400 meters in just 65 seconds which had the people who knew something about good running, drooling. As far as Stephanie was concerned, It was just another race. I didnt know whether it was good or bad. LATER SHE was to run the 400 just 63 seconds and during the eighth grade ran it in 62.7 which still stands today as a district re- LISTENS to instructions from Weber State's Gary Crompton at the beginning of the 200 meter championship race. Again Clements took second to Williams of Weber. CLEMENTS 4-- cord. Over her illustrious career at Clearfield High, she amassed over STEPHANIE still hasnt decided where shell attend college but says she has it narrowed dow n to a couple of choices. About getting excited again for track. Clements said, Itll be exciting. The atmosphere will be different, the school will be new, therell be new courses of study and Ill be there because I w ant to get an education, not because I have to be there. Eventually Stephanie wants to graduate in fashion merchandising and hopefully someday own a fashion boutique w hich w ill feature women's wear. AND I always want to continue she says, even if it's running, two miles of jogging every morning. There's no feeling like being in good physical shape. I've started a good habit and good habits are hard to break, just like bad habits. John Flint thought it a pleasure to work with Clements during her three years at Clearfield and re- One of Stephanie's marked, in Andrea Williams in the state finals doesnt annoy her as much as some people would think. If I improve my times each time, it really doesn't matter who beats me. What counts is whether Im doing the best I can, said Clements. SHE WONT tell a lie she gets motivated by gold touching tapes first and MVP awards like anyone. Perhaps the place I e 80 gold medals, was a a state champ in the state champ in the 200 meters as a DURING HER three years at Clearfield, Stephanie was a blaze of speed and grace combined. She ranks right up there with the finest athletic talent the school has produced. strong points is that she has such a variety in life. She isn't one to get bored or methodical in any one way. What Im trying to say is that she has fun. I believe she put more pressure on herself this spring than what she would have liked, but she does know how to have fun. STEPHANIE is in a class by herself. She was the first one to congratulate Andrea (Williams) when she beat her at state. Her sportsmanship makes her special. Ive just loved working with people like Stephanie." Davis Team Off To Memphis By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - KAYSVILLE Lowell Taylor, the father of former Davis High greats like Craig, Todd, and Brian Taylor and the up and coming Mike, chose to call the second quarter play of Davis 3 victory over the Provo Hustlers in the 1985 AAU state championship game the finest quarter of basketball Ive ever witnessed a high school team put forth. 88-7- THATS a statement which has to carry a lot of weight after having seen hundreds of games over the years. its But no kidding, the Davis kids were brilliant. They came first quarter deback from a 19-- 4 ficit to take the lead at halftime, 43-3- 8. BECAUSE of their unmatched excellence in passing, ball handling, shooting and rebounding in that game, theyve earned themselves a ticket to the 1985 Amateur Athletic Union Nationals to be staged in Memphis, Tennessee in Taylor, along with Glen Meier, were the coaches of the Davis mid-Apr- il HERE Stephanie prepares her blocks for the 400 meter dksh, a race she was unbeaten in for two years in dual, region and state competition. Someday shell probably bring this same kind of honor to a univer- sity and many of us will say, I had the privledge of watching Stephanie in high school. BUT FOR now its time to say and Clements is quite truthful in admitting she is glad to be letting go of it for now. good-by- e Im mentally and physically drained, said Celements who won the girls 400 meters for the 4-- A second straight year, finished STEPHANIE Clements prepares takes off in the 100 meters during the 1985 state girls meet. She finished second there to Webers Andrea Williams. 4-- A most motivation during high school was from my coaches. All of them had a good attitude, which is what a coach really needs. They had the ability to look at the positive side when chips were down. ILL NEVER forget Coach (John) Flint. He gave his all to everyone. He asked me a million times if he could stay after practice and help me on my starts or finishes, continued Clements. Stephanie comes from a family of runners, from Robert the father to Melanie the youngest daughter. Layton Loses On Fri. LAYTON - It wasn't a happy day for the Lancer baseball team last Friday as Weber came into That town and beat them moved the Warriors into a definite playoff position while Layton was -- 5-- 0. forced to playoff with Roy on Monday to decide who would advance as the third place team from Region One. LAYTON ended the regular season with a 5 record. 5-- mid-Jul- squad which blitzed through the 84 double elimination state tournament with no defeats. They dealt Cyprus a 62-5- 5 defeat to open the tournament and then beat the MVP Alan Framton and Provo 49-4- 7 in overtime. Their third victory 5 was an easy victory over Skyline on which Danny Vranes and Tom Chambers little brothers play. and will now THIS DAVIS AAU BASKETBALL team won the state championship in The advance into the national tournament to be staged in Memphis, Tennessee in mid-Julsquad was made up of players who played for the Darts last year excluding any graduating seniors. The squad was coached by Lowell Taylor and Glen Meier. mid-Apr- il 3-- A 61-4- THE DAVIS kids then beat the Provo Hustlers (a combination of Orem High and Timpview High 0 to earn a ticket into players) the eventual final game. The Hustlers then came back through the consolation bracket to set up the scene for the championship game. The AAU age limitations basically includes all high school players and younger with the exception of graduating seniors. 57-6- AS MENTIONED the Davis kids got down 19-- 4 in the first quarter of the final game and were eventually out21-10aftone quarter. But the second quarter rally which saw 7 Davis outscore Provo gave the much smaller Kaysvillc team the momentum it needed to rebound into the national finals. In that final game, Davis was led by Mike Taylors 33 points. Greg Willard had 16, Jon Rhees 9. Chris Card 12, Brent Meier 10. York Major 6 and Kurt Stoddards 2. 33-1- THE STATE AAU event included some 20 Utah teams from Spanish Fork on the south to Mountain Crest on the north. Some of the squads combined high school players from two or more different schools such as the Utah Noodle team which was represented by Roy, Ben Lomond and Ogden highs. Other top schools there included Bonneville, Brighton, Layton. Kearns, and West.. er THE DAVIS team, in order to make the trip to Tennessee, needs local support in its attempt to make the trip. Any contributions would be welcome. As has been indicative of Davis High teams of the past, this AAU championship team wasn't blessed with lots of size. They used a lot of hustle and some intelligent rebounding and beating opponents down the court to advance. If Meier wasn't the top scorer, then Taylor or someone else was there to take up the slack. AN INTERESTING note about this team emerged in the beginning moments of the victory over Skyline. The Davis kids actually were caught watching the much bigger Skyline team go through their dunking-the-baroutines during e warm-ups- . You could sense a bit of intimidation. But actually it wasn't intimida ll pre-gam- tion at all as the Davis team sped past the Skyline team with ease as they stole passes, boxed out for rebounds and ran the bigger Skyline team in the ground for a win. The Skyline team had their high school coach. Paul Jeppson leading the way as did many of the 20 teams in competition. 61-4- 5 NOT ONLY did Meier and Taylor have a good tournament, but folks like Chris Card. .Ion Rhees and Greg Willard plaved outstanding as well. All ol thc team members contributed well. Card came back from a dismal first half in the overtime victory over Provo to steal the ball from Provo as they were going for the final shot. He later canned the game winning points on a with just five seconds to go. 1 |
