Show t Fkvt From Bmm To MhAttAmrkfan PROVO - There it was in black and white. When the Associated Press came out with their football team the name of Kyle Morrell of BYU was listed on the first team. WERE NOT talking about some local paper naming him to their all star club but this was the AP naming him one of the best in the land for heavens sake. For the record the AP team is selected by the coaches making this selection even sweeter knowing that it was the real experts, nor those media people, doing the judging. KYLE thus becomes the first football legitimate player on a major level from Davis County. Just a year ago Curtis Sampson of Bountiful High was named first team in the junior college ranks and another Kevin Kott was a first learner on the IAA squad. But were talking about the biggest of the big boys with this selection. These are the guys that go on national television with Bob Hope. Kyle first learned of his selection after a strong workout on the weights at BYU. I was just coming out of the weight room when Mark Allen came up to me and told me the football secretary told him had been chosen. I was really surprised. Sure everyone thinks and dreams about being an but you never really think it will happen. Players out here in the West really dont get the notoriety or recognition that other parts of the country get. MORRELL STOPS Tulsa runner short of first down. first team selection than Kyle. What Kyle did do though was come up with the reputation of being a big play man. It was he that stopped Pittsburg on the one yard line. It was Kyle that tackled the Wy oming quarterback for a loss on fourth dow n and it was Kyle that made the play of the year with his over the shoulder-tackl- e of the Hawaii quarterback. The funny thing about the Hawaii play is that received a negative grade because I was lined up in the wrong position," he joked. THIS selection ended a big week for Kyle and his family and awards and honors continued to pour in. Earlier in the week the Western Athletic Conference named him Defensive Player of the Year in the WAC, an honor he shared with two other players. Both of these awards mean a lot to me but I would have to say the AP award would be at the top of the list although the WAC award is something special. As mentioned the AP elite team annually is presented to the nation on the Bob Hope Christmas special. I received my airline ticket this past week to fly down to Burbank for the taping of that show admitted Kyle who went to California this past weekend for the taping, To be honest I'm a little scared. I would just as soon take on a big pulling lineman from Michigan as I would go on that stage, he laughed. THE JOKES and ribbing have begun for Kyle at BYU since that We havent announcement started practicing for the Holiday Bowl yet but Im still taking a lot of ribbing. Its great though because all of the players are really glad for me. its all little stuff like my nickname now is A.P. he confessed. Things have been happening fast for Kyle since the team has been published, for one thing I've had a lot of agents phone me asking me if they can represent me in the upcoming draft, but I just tell them I'm not even thinking about professional ball right now. I want to get Michigan out of the way. to The only thing left is "1 don't know about that" laughed Kyle. "I just wanted toget drafted and play ball somewhere. Somewhere with a warm climate if picking their defensive backs. Teams just didn't throw that 1 KYLE MORRELL became first athlete in the history of Davis County football to make First honors. This spectacular play versus Hawaii is one good reason why. Team from Here was a secondary player who only had three interceptions of the season and that statistic seemed to be the gauge the experts used in ALL THAI' professional stuff on hold right now just w ant ter line up and beat Michigan. They are a good team who just line up and run right at ya. I dont care what anyone says. Barry Switer included, we deserve the ranking and after we beat Michigan we get the title." No one is more deserving than Kyle Morrell for this honor. This guy is a genuine person who cares about others. There are some who look at him as a misfit and a hot dog but they are the peo-- . pie w ho simply don't know Ky le or. his family w ho are as proud as anyone could be. KYLE Morrell is both on and off the field. is 1 IN ANY event the fact remains there are those who believe Kyle is one of the main reasons the Cougars are undefeated and the top ranked club in the country , and the AP coaches certainly seem to feel that way. When talking about BYU players that were named you're talking offensive stars. The from last defensive the Provo Club was back in 1974 and when you consider some of the defensive stars out of BYU currently in the NFL you soon realize that Kyle is at the head of a pretty impressive class. LIKE MOST kids Kyle used to dream about certain things and was one of being an those dreams. The thing is w hen 1 was younger 1 figured baseball would be my sport because wasn't as big as some other people but I do think 1 made the right decision four years ago. Just to recall Kyle could have played baseball for the Cougars but he elected to acput his full effort into pigskin tion. We're talking about a guy w ho's to gone from From to From and then to . One problem those two games present though are the fact that it would keep Kyle out of school for three weeks at the start of the semester. I want to finish school but I haven't decided if I will go next semester with all this happening.
