Chatland Joins Staff At Humana Davis - North - LAYTON When after nearly Karen Chatland left her years nursing position at McKay Dee 15 Hospital to join the Humana Hospital Davis North, her feelings were mixed with regret and excitement. REGARDLESS of your experiis never easy, she says. A nurse is on the front line, working with the physician, the patient and their family. A nurse must be technically competent, but also have good communication skills and loyalty to the job. The stereotype too often shows an uncaring nurse, but that image is far from the truth. Regardless of how long youve worked, a patients suffering or death never comes easy. Luckily in this profession we also see the other side in which a patient leaves healthy and comforted. Medicine has changed much in my 23 years, but the fundamentals of nursing are fairly caring competence. con-stant-- -a THE community-centere- d atmosphere at Davis North also affects Karen. Weve seen families come in numerous times and they feel comforted knowing they will see a friendly and familiar face. One case, she says, involved a father whom she met following his childs crib death (The hardest cases I personally deal with.) Later the same man visited the hospital during his wifes surgery and felt comfort in seeing Karen once again. KARENS interest in nursing be- - Day. We have certainly seen the kindness of people match the needs of people this year," she said. The number of people sponsored by the agency rather than the community has decreased each year as more and more residents have become involved. She attributes that to a wider awareness and understand of the program as local newspapers have given coverage, as well as to the low-inco- increased involvement of past sponsors as they have succeeded sponsorship year after year. seen more progress in wage and benefits over the last eight years than in the 15 years previously. THE MOST difficult task as nursing director, according to Karen, is the staffing. Since staffing varies widely due to hospital census, the number of nurses needed changes quickly. In order to keep costs down, Karen will continue the PRN staffing system in which 50 percent of the staff is on schedule. a part-tim- e, on-ca- Shoes for the Whole Family rayes to SHE WILL be assisting in the Visiting Teaching, omemaking and Welfare Committees with the other seven members of this group. She has four sons, two of whom have served LDS missions, two daughters and one grandson. I ENJOYED my years at the Ogden hospital, she recalls, but there was a great growth potential at Davis North. The community needed a hospital and, as a member of that community, I was delighted to be part of it. She was right about the growth potential as this month she begins her tenure as the associate executive director of nursing heading a professional staff. Its one for which she a challenge-b- ut is well prepared.- - As the third nurse hired at Davis North in the fall of 1976 she was assigned as the coordinator of the medical, surgical and pediatric units. Two years later she was named a nursing supervisor and in 1980 became the hospitals first assistant director of nursing. Santa program was approximately the same as last year, the average number of families helped by each organization was greater than in other years. Consequently, most needy families in the program were helped by a sponsor rather than the Department of Human Services, according to Ann Day, Human Services worker. ST, ROSE of Lima Church in Layton helped the most families with 42, while Hill Air Force Base sponsored 25. The Roy Elks sponsored 20 families while other organizations helped from to 10. Most individual family sponsors did one family each, according to Mrs. Day. Monetary donations totaling nearly $2,000 were used to help some families and will continue to be used throughout the year to purchase fresh food for families applying for emergency supplies. Canned goods contributed by elementary school children were sufficient to restock the preserved food supply of the emergency food bank. THE SUCCESS of the program rests on the generosity of residents of Davis County, according to Mrs. ! , -295- All -7301- Handbags are 20 ott too |
