Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, OCTOBER 3, 1984 x Darts Hamers To Burst Hoping Viking Bubble By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports . Roberts Shines, Despite Loss Journal Sports - Folks, this could be the year that Viewmont Highs cross country bubble finally bursts. AT LEAST that is the way Davis Mike Shaw and his '84 team are thinking. For years the Vikings have put together some talented squads who have dominated Region Four cross country competition and Davis High, usually the second best through those years, had to settle for second-bes- t when it came time to hand out region championship trophies. BUT LYNN Dubois squad doesn't appear to have the depth and superior strength theyve fielded in years past while the Darts are perhaps sending out the best squad since Shaw took over the .ross country program. But, by any means, we are not taking Viewmont lightly. I believe folks would probably favor us to win the region right now, but Viewmont has got some kids that could come through," said Shaw. LEADING THE way for the Darts this year has been John Kimball, the younger brother to one of last year's mainstays. Matt Kim- ball. Kimball, a senior, has finished in the top 10 in every major invitational held this year. That includes some solid competition from meets at Provo, Murray and Weber States. KIMBALL returns this year as the sixth place finisher from last years state cross country meet. The No. 2 runner at Davis has with the competition. LAYTON - It takes an effort from 22 guys to win football games. -- WE COULD still be in the playoff picture if we wanted to be, but weve got to win and quick like. This week the Lancers will host the Roy Royals tor their 84 homecoming. Neither Roy or Layton has yet to post a victory this season so undoubtedly someone will come out a victor. AND IF 22 guys had of played with the kind of intensity and heart that Mike Roberts played with last Friday night in Brigham City against the Box Elder Bees, the Lancers probably could have won been Joe Hawkins, who last spring in the Darts was a long distance races, primarily the 1600 meters. late-bloom- er KAYSVILLE dated in the first half but in nearly every second half weve played, weve outscored or played evenly By KEITH DUNCAN HAWKINS BEST performance this year came at the Murray event where he placed tenth overall. No. 3 has been nailed down recently by Justin Julander, a junior. He was 14th in the Murray race and 23rd in the big WSC event last weekend. Julander, though small in stature, is also a very good wrestler. CHRIS HESS takes over the No. 4 spot and the thing Shaw likes most about him is his consistency. The rest of the varsity is shaped with Curt Black, Kenny Robbins, and Chris May. AS FAR as Viewmont is concerned, I would be very surprised if they didnt get their act together real quick, said Shaw, Ive just got too much respect in Dubois and theyve got too much to respect in their tradition to not make a run for it. Earlier, the Vikings were clobbered by Highland High and Davis turned around last week and blasted Highland themselves. 50-- Roberts, a senior, toyed with the Bees running backs like they were little leaguers as he took on fullbacks trying to make a block and then proceded to tackle the tailback. On offense he pounded on people picking up a total of 94 yards on the evening, 20-ya- rd BUT ALL of that couldnt help the Lancers win as the Bees used three or four big plays to beat Layton 25-- 9 and send them home still searching for their first victory of the season. Roberts couldnt contain himself for two or three hours after the defeat as his emotions ran over him. , ASSISTANT coach, Russ Jones, stated, After hearing and seeing Roberts get as emotional as he did, my heart was tugged at all night. It was sincerely touched by the kid. He put everything into that game, I mean everything. Of course Roberts wasnt the only one to have a good game, but his effort was perhaps the most YOUVE sometimes just got to put those things out of your mind and try to ignore people when they say stupid things. Were still a good football team and weve got the best coach in the region in Coach Hawkins. You just want to do everything in your power to win for that guy. supreme and his teammates awarded him the distinction of being the games most valuable offensive and defensive player. ANOTHER LANCER whohada fairly good game was quarterback Brian Bailey, who commented with all the sincerity in the world, We just cant get tough when we have a chance to punch it in from close in. I dont know what our problem is. We were as basic as could be last week. If Roberts wasnt running the same play, then I was throwing the same pass (Bailey threw for 153 yards in the second I DAVIS HAS already won the Murray Invitational this fall and Viewmont finished no better than eighth in that race. Bottom line, Viewmont is going to have to come together real quick if they want any chance of defending their state champion- ship, said Shaw. DAVIS IS not looking past region, but they have their sights on doing well in state competition as well. Shaw figures that Weber and Bonneville will be two of the better clubs in the state meet. THERES no question that were losing some of our optim- said Roberts after Monday nights practice, But most of the guys on this team love the sport of football and would play it all winter long if they could. For that reason we arent quitting yet because we ism, still feel CALL IT what youd like, but the Lancers just couldnt get the pigskin in the end zone against the Bees. They were within the line on at least five occasions for the evening and all they could muster was nine points. A couple of touchdown passes were dropped by Layton receivers in the end zone to add to the frustration. Roberts, who has been moved from his middle linebacker position to that of defensive end, com-- ; mented that people in your own school have what it takes to bet against ya. I lost a couple of Cokes on the Box Elder game, he said. weve got it within us to beat somebody. Roberts analysis of the season went about as follows, I believe weve been outsized by nearly every team. I think we get some blocking but it comes later in the games when its too late. Maybe its that the guys just get intimi halO. WEVE GOT to Beat Roy during our homecoming. If the guys believe they arent going to come off that field without a win, then we will win. Coach Hawkins stated, We wont take anything away from Box Elder because they are a good football team, but we did stop em. WE TOLD the kids we had to stop three plays, the dive on the option, the quarterback on the option and the middle screen. Even their quarterback ran 50 yards for a score on the second play of the game, we had a sophomore defending that is still learning his position. But after that, we stopped their running game cold. Except for three or four big pass plays after that, we were solid. I CANT say enough about Roberts though, the guy poured his soul into the game. About the Roy game, Im a pretty close friend of Fred Thompson and I told him Sunday when we went down to Salt Lake to visit a friend in the hospital that at least one of us would have some happiness in our homes this coming weekend. Neither Roy or Layton has won a game yet. Ehin Gets Playing Time Plus Some Ink, Photos - SAN DIEGO Chuck Ehin is getting more embedded in the San called dead. If it was on me, it was a bad call, said Ehin, I was just going for the loose ball. THE FORMER Layton High football star, now a defensive end with the NFL Chargers, had his picture appear in San Diego Tribune the day after the game and COULD THE Charger defense have tired when the game was on the line in the fourth quarter? Ehin wasnt sure, but he said he thought the group was emotionally wasted in the crucial moments. It got a little long, Ehin said of the game, .When we came in, our plan was not to burn ourselves out, but the way we played, I think for some reason we did in the very end. WHAT HAPPENS to a lot of people when they play the Raiders is they get very emotional at the start and theres nothing left in the end. We wanted to play very even throughout the whole game. But I think, in the end, we fell short of that. Ehin and his Chargers lost that game Diego Charger football picture with each week that passes. had several sportswriters interview and talk with him after the San Diego-Lo- s Angeles Raider game a few Monday nights ago. The actual part of the article that quoted Ehin went something like the following: word-for-wo- WRITTEN by Clark Judge, the article read, More trouble for the zebras: When the Chargers were whistled for a personal four just before Marcus Allens game winning TD, it seemed the infraction was called on defensive end Chuck Ehin.
