Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 5, 1984 Davis First Continued Layton Loses Heartbreaker caught in his life and which put the Lancers ahead, 22-1- THE LONG, well executed pass was one of a number of positive things the Layton team was beginning to accomplish under new first-yeman. Brad Hawkins. So Bountiful, to start the fourth quarter, was forced to punt after being denied a continued drive. But Layton quckly gave the ball back as they fumbled on their first play in the next series, Things were to only get worse though. ar NEXT CAME a roughing the passer call on Laytons part in a third down situation, which moved the ball to Layton's 15 yard line. Bountiful helped the Lancer's cause by getting consecutive penalties on the next play and consequently being moved back some 30 yards. But Layton killed themselves again in trying to shut the Braves out as a face mask penalty gave Bountiful life again. Moments later the visitors scored and the score was tied at 2 with 5:28 left. Give the Lancers credit in the next series because they moved from their own 20 to Bountifuls 43 before another suicide fumble killed them again. Layton had moved 37 yards in five plays including a key first down run by Bqiley. 22-2- STARTING AT their own 39 yard line, the Braves then began moving the pigskin like their lives depended upon it. In three plays the Braves went 56 yards and making it apparent that all they needed to do was to get close enough to the goal posts where their fine kicker could punch it through. Of course thats finally what happened as Layton was beaten on a 20 yard field goal with just 19 seconds left. ILL GIVE Bountiful credit, they were a much better team than I expeetdd them to be. Covey, their sophomore QB was super. The Braves are big and they moved well and did a good job defensively. But it gets right down to it, that we beat ourselves by penalties and fumbles. They were a good team, but we flat beat ourselves. BUT THEN again, like I told the kids, there were a lot of things that we did that were good. Just like with Bountifuls bad punt in open the second half, we didnt just give it right back, but we took advantage and made Bountiful pay for their mistake by scoring. "Then a little later we move right back and have Martin catch a brilliant pass from Bailey. OVERALL, IT was just penalties that killed us. We talked about them and other things that kill ya for two weeks during maybe we talked about them too much. two-a-day- s, Defensively 1 was dis- appointed, mainly because of our exhibition of tackling. We had people in our arms two or three times and didnt get the guy on the ground. We've got kids that have never played football before so weve got a lot of work to do. I THINK defensively that we'll be a good team, but we've got a lot of improvement to make," Hawkins stated. Memories Of1937 Grid Title lifter Om By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE - One championship that will probably never get lost in the shuffle of many state tropies Davis High athletic teams have taken home, is the very first state football crown the school cherished back in 1937. THE DARTS have racked up numerous state grid titles since then, but the first one wont be easy to forget. Just ask guys like Joe Adams, who today resides in Layton and who in 38 was the clubs fiery quarterback. Don't stop there though. You could continue on with guys like the speedy Val Sheffield and the sturdy Dell Hayes. The husky tackles of old were Robert Clark and Duane Miller. Bountifuls Joe Davis could talk about it too. All in all, the remainder of the 38 first team could relive the good times as well, guys like Bob Trump, Birt Davis, Dick Naylor, Parley Call and Dee Chipman. DAVIS, WHO averaged 160 pounds on the front Jine and 143 in the backfield, met Bear River High School in the final game of the Division A championship game in late November of 1937 at the University of Utah. Several of the former players admitted it was quite a scene to find two country high school teams battling for all the marbles in the 125-pou- big city. THE BEARS and Darts played a tough, physical game but in the end the team from Davis escaped with a victory. As Laytons Adams remembers, favorite No one was a clear-cu- t going into the game, but we knew we had what it took to win. 12-- 0 IRONICALLY, THE quarterback for the Bear River Team was the sensational Melvin Manning, who today is an assistant principal at Layton High School. It just so happens that Joe Adams, the Davis to QB, is the father-in-laLaytons present principal, Paul w Smith. Leading the way for Darts as coach, was the former Deb Young who passed away in the late 70s. Adams had quite a line for his former coach but summed up the attributes in saying, Coach Young wasnt as aloof as most coaches were back in those days. He was more like the coaches of today, just one of the kids, rather than setting himself off and away. He concentrated on making sure the kids have a bunch of fun, he was just a super coach. ADAMS, WHO later made the team along with teammates Duane Miller and Joe Davis, described the 38 championship year as one .of the highlights of our lives. ,, ' Adams said, Back then the coaches would allow us to call our own plays, plays were never sent in. One particular play that Ill never forget was when we were backed all-sta- te A Hunter's class series will be held at Clearfield High School again this year and will be conducted by Gerrold and Norma Dalton, of Sunset. Warren Hatch at Viewmont is known as a passing coach and now first year head man Brad Hawkins at Layton is making believers out of his followers via the air route. The game is scheduled for Viewmont but the track situation is still up in the air. Weve been prom- ised that the field will be ready for this game said Warren Hatch but I wouldnt bet the farm on it. THE ONLY options open to the Vikes would be to play at either Davis or Clearfield since both Bountiful and Woods Cross will be using their respective fields. In any event the kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. and with two pass happy clubs the finishing time could be hours away from them. Viewmont comes into the contest with a 39-- 6 thrashing of Clearfield for a confidence builder while the Lancers may still be smarting from a last minute loss to Bountiful. WE SOMETIMES had to waste plays to figure out how things might work, but we grew closer doing it that way. Like the teams through present years, the 38 championship team found their success on the ground, rather than through the air. In Davis first championship game, the Darts picked up 222 yards rushing and 44 passing. ALL CHAMPIONSHIPS are special, but thats one Ill never forget, said Adams in conclusion. ys area. Looking ahead to Layton Hatch was quick to point out his fears concerning the Lancers. The one thing that really scares me is their quarterback Brian Bailey. The kid can run, he can throw and he is a two year starter so he knows what it takes to be a leader and a winner. Then the other thing that really concerns me is the athletic ability that the wide receivers have, they are big play people. IN FACING Layton this week the Vikings will get to look at an entirely different ball team than the type they did a week ago. Clearfield is more of a big physical type team while Layton will use a lot of different formations and sets on offense and will try to finese you. They pass a lot and most of their passes are timing routes, the short routes. To be honest I believe Layton has more athletic ability than Clearfield had. 295-612- t 3 - - Tf .
