Well, in Clearfield this year, you could probably describe the Falcon football club as the No Name Foot- : -- bl "No-Nam- e ball Team. : IF THERE were one more lost iind found ingredient that has been jnore lost than found in recent years. it would be a little luck. : Last year's Clearfield High team YOU CANT just talk about playing as a team, youve got to care and really believe in it. We talk it up everyday in practice. Every player is as good as the other player, we have superstars none. I suppose after all the years Ive been in football, a guy has to at times. Maybe Ive been a little passive at times and too much of a nice guy. I believe this year I wanted to implement some things for the better because deep down I believe this group of kids has the makings to be a good football team. Its getting back to the A B Cs, Hancock continued to say. TO TELL you honestly, I couldnt say one way or the other how THKRK ARE no superstars and there are no returning lettermen which sensibly means one thing if Clearfield wants to turn their football fortunes around, play team football. The best thing about it, is that the veteran Brent Hancock has his Tids believing they can play team football. Even though there are :some extremely capable football players here, the kids are rallying :'round Hancocks plea to do it Together. said Hancock who will be entering his eighth season as Clearfields head man. attainable goals, was clearly a better football team than their final record indicated. But a few bad bounces and incidentals caused three overtime games to go the other way. More or less it downright became a nightmare eventually. I think well do, said Clear- fields Dennis Langford, a senior offensive and defensive tackle, But I can say that we know we cant win if we play as individuals. Coach Hancock has us believing that. I THINK coach came to camp this year a little changed over last year. Hes buckling down on some things and putting more emphasis on playing as a team and doing things together. Hes been working us too. When we go home at night, were not in the mood to do too much. The kids and I know weve got an uphill battle this year, but with some bounces going our way we might be able to reach some very DEFENSIVE LINE - There will be some size and quickness to help build the defensive line with, but its important that the Falcons try to bring it all together at once. LAYTON Ever wandered upon a group of little league football players, maybe an age group who are just beginning to love the sport and who have a young, en- thusiastic leader spiriting them along? ITS THE kind of situation where the kids would do just about anything for the coach and the coach for the kids. Its the kind of thing that in the end, usually produces a winner. Well, its that kind of setting that exists every day in the Layton High football camp. FIRST YEAR head football coach, Brad Hawkins is the spirited young leader and the 84 team has thus far shown a willingness to follow Hawkins to the end of the earth. Hopefully this crew will help to put some points up for Layton. Mike Roberts, Robert Femeau and James Batchelor will be three of Laytons better backs. Hawkins will get his debut, along with his kids, this Friday night at home against the Bountiful Braves. After one week of practice, Im beginning to feel a little bit confident that these kids can sense some light at the end of the tunnel. If we can work and improve as much as we did day by day through the first week of practice, I believe we can be a pretty good football team. BUT, WEVE got to keep improving. Were not young, but were inexperienced with a lot of kids out there. A lot of high schools are that way but we are inexperienced because of a new coach, a new staff and new things to run. Basically the kids are learning all over again. We kids to beat themselves. want the other team to beat us, continued Hawkins. BOTTOM LINE, I think we re e going to be competitive. I believe our region is very competitive but we should be right in the thick of it if we progress like I know the kids can, said Hawkins. Defensive Line - You can bet that Hawkins is pleased with the fact that hell have both Russ Jones and former Layton great, Brandon.' Flint, helping to mold a solid defen-- ' sive and offensive line. Through one week of work and even into Mondays practice, Jones and Flint, were doing their part to get the best out of Laytons big people. dog-gon- WERE NOT rebuilding because in high school you dont re- THE LANCERS will have to choose from people like Tim Fra-- .' zier 200), James Kortwright, keep believing in themselves and working like they did through the first week, well be a competitive 200), 175), Wayne (6-190), Dave Tetero (6-175) and Jim Ritter (6-170) to get the job done on the defense. ; Our defense is doing a pretty build, but we are rebuilding an offense that the kids have never run before. ITS SORTA like a father-soconversation even though the son (the players in this case) dont say a whole lot. But the one point about these isolated sessions is that theyre more fun to attend if theyve followed victory rather than defeat. Last season the coaches and kids went through 12 of those gatherings after a win which will probably be hard to match in any future year. But folks, if bets were being placed on who might repeat such a feat, theres a bunch who might wager that the 84 team could do n the trick again. THIS YEARS representatives of good ole Davis High should be a respectable club again and even though I wont predict them to win 12 in a row and make it to the state championship again, I am with the bunch who says theyll be awfuly tough to beat. Gone is Coach Ward Sawley and in comes a veteran assistant at Davis, Jimmy Dickson. Only days after Sawley let out the news of his departure, the Darts administration voiced their confidence in Dickson and made him the schools sixth head football coach since the 1940s when Tough Linfprd was in town. THE KIDS like Dickson and through the first week of practice buckled right down through his procedures. One returning letterman and a starter off last years defensive line, Rody Meacham, stated, Coach Dickson is a competitor, Ive.found that out wrestling for him. (Dickson has been Davis wrestling coach for the past five season). Its too bad we had to lose Coach Sawley, but Coach Dickson is a super coach and well get the job done under him. THE MAIN thing is that we want to keep up the winning tradi-- . tion thats been going on here for more than a decade and I think weve got a pretty close team to help get the job done. . T Cmtmmf In 84 the Darts will not return the experience they brought back . in 83, but the experience the present group does have might be just enough to help bring Davis its sixth consecutive region title. Collectively as a group, the 84 seniors have proven themselves as winners through their sophomore and junior years and one thing is for sure, this years squad will be heavily laden with seniors. There may be a few juniors gain some playing time, but its a year when seniors will dominate. NOTHING is new with the offense, at least in what kind will be run. Dickson will blend some capable receivers, two quarterbacks who throw well, and a pretty good core of running backs with the double wing. Well base the offense around whatever people will give us, said Dickson. Dicksons thoughts after one week of practice were, The kids are picking up the system well, and hopefully were going to be aggressive.
