THE AUTOMATED calling system is one of the newest ways the administration at Layton High has of involving parents with the educating of teenagers. Principal Paul Smith says I hope this is a helpful form of communications and it is not annoying. This is one part of the total process of parent communication and involvement that we hope will help all students reach excellence in their education. Attendance information is fed into the schools computer system. A tape is made for each grade at the school. Phone numbers of absent students are dialed automatically by the computer system. If there is no answer, the computer memory stores this response and calls later. A print out shows the attendance secretary numbers that were not reached. THE RECORDED message is played for about two hours in the evening when most parents are at home. So far several parents have been contacted using the automated calling system that have been unaware that their child has not been attending school. The recorded message gives the number of the high schools attendance office so parents can make contact with the school if this is needed. Each morning after the tape is played there are many phone calls to the attendance secretary. IF THE automated calling system proves to be an effective means of communication between the parents and the school officials, in the future the calls could be expanded to inform parents of all students about special school programs, report cards, graduation and other school programs that are significant to the families of students, dmg VILATE McDonald, Joyce Dalton and Jill Peterson also third grade teachers will assist the group with special effects. Several performances have been planned beginning Dec. 4 at the Convalescent Center in Bountiful and the State Capitol Building in Salt Lake City.
