Earnings are enough to spend on movies, Lagoon and school clothes. Hours are few so there is enough time for summer recreation and relaxtion. THIS SUMMER four Layton boys, Phillip Reid, 10; Jay Holley," 14; Robert Clegg, 15 and Steven Reid, 14, decided to travel to Iowa for summer employment and the chance to earn man-siz- e wages. The boys worked for Pioneer International under a special contract to corn in special patches planted for hybrid seed. FROM JULY 6 until Aug. 5 the Layton boys worked from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily removing the top 12 inches from each corn plant in a field that was at least Vi mile long. The crews worked in a ere w of 2 pickers and a driver. A tractor was set up with special baskets large enough to hold two people. The baskets went out from both sides of the tractor over rows of corn on each side. The two middle corn rows that were straddled el 1 by the tractor were the variety that was left to pollinate the corn crop so the tassels in the two rows were not removed. EACH TASSEL had to be removed. If one were left, the hybrid strain would not be true and the company would not be able to sell seed corn. The tractor and the baskets that held the tassel pickers was set up so the height could be adjusted according to the height of the corn. The varieties the Layton boys varied from 2 to 10 feet in height. BESIDES long hours, there were many problems that made the job difficult. Heat that reached 90 degrees plus slowed down the picking. Rainy weather caused delays. Lightning, wind and sudden thunder storms plagued the crew. Frequently the tractor would get stuck or break down. The crew worked under great pessure. If the com was allowed to bloom, all the seed would be lost. Each day a quota had to be met. Any crew that failed to do the required acerage would have to get assistance from other crews. The expense of getting assistance from others was deducted from the contracted crews wages. THERE WERE some hidden benefits to this most demanding job. The boys got free room and board. They lived in a camper near a home. Home cooked meals were provided by the contractor in his home.
