Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 12, 1984 In Norma's Opinion Please Tbomlefs Grove Recalled By LEONE OPENSHAW JACOBS Former resident Now of Salt Lake City am sure there are. readers out there who fondly remember, as 1 do, the excursions up Weber Canyon to Thornleys Grove. Several times our Kaysville ward held summer outings there and once 1 remember a stake outing. I THORNLEYS Grove was owned by John W. Thornley. When Mr. Thornley disbanded the land which had been used for grazing of his livestock, it was used by he and his family and relatives as a camping area for special events and soon for the public to enjoy outings, as well as overnight camping, etc., but was never a commercialized resort area. Family groups of various sizes, annual girls summer camp, Boy Scout camping and many others enjoyed this beautiful area with its lush grass and tall cottonwood trees. It was located just below the town of Peterson (Morgan County), but it was necessary to cross the Weber River to get to the Grove. USUALLY, BY July 1st, the wa- ter was low enough so that by turning off the road at certain places where the river was shallow, campers could cross over safely with their horses and covered wagons. It was always a thrill and scarey to make the crossing for one never knew for sure, if one of the horses might step into a deep By NORMA PREECE headed for the trees to pick out a camp site. BUT WHAT a surprise awaited us: all was quiet and no one in sight, as far as we could see we were the only campers in the grove. 1 knew Mama was concerned but she said nothing. The boys had found a choice camping spot and were unhitching the horses. Mama and we girls carried the food boxes while the boys tethered the horses and began putting up the tents, one for the boys and one for we girls and Mama. hole and stumble. ONE PARTICULAR summer our family had already been to Thornleys Grove for a ward outing, but we children coaxed for another camping trip. Papa said he could not go, as the alfalfa must be cut, so undaunted we coaxed Mama to go with us. There would be our two brothers and a boy friend a piece, my sister and I and a girl friend apiece, eight teenagers. Our brothers were familiar with driving and caring for the horses, so that was no problem and Thornleys Grove was such a favorite camping site, we knew there would be others camping there. AS THE sun was going down and we were just sitting down to have our evening meal, we caught sight of a tramp sauntering through the trees. He had probably jumped off FINALLY Mamma consented to go and stay one night and Papa said it was alright. Next morning a hurried trip to the store was made for groceries, pies and cookies were baked, tents, bedding and sweaters, etc. were packed into the wagon. By 2 p.m. the horses were hitched to the wagon and in high spirits we began our journey up the reached the place where we cross the river. All went well and we arrived safely on the other side and where the onions are sliced, processed and frozen was very badly damaged. The drugs and-o- r basic good of a security system is to discourage burglars. Noise and lights are the activities most likely to present discouragement. A home security system uses one or the other or both. However, nothing will probably discourage a really determined professional burglar. Every home, car, recreational . vehicle and boat should have a good fire extinguisher. A halon gas extinguisher was recommended. This kind of extinguisher does not do extensive damage to home interiors, automobile components, etc. as most dry or wet extinguishers will. Halon gas is a nontoxic gas which is heavier than air.
