Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, JUNE 20, 1984 Camps Make Summer Decisions Tough By DAVE WIGHAM IN THE month of June alone a teenage athlete has the choice of attending basketball clinics, soccer clinics, football clinics, golf clinics, tennis lessons and an occasional baseball camp. Now Im not down on any of these sports or any of the camps, but for goodness sakes the kid only has so much time and more than anything the parents only have so much money. Clipper Sports It used to be the toughest decision a teenager had to make in the summer months was which triends house he was going to sleep over at on a given night. BUT THEN again those were the same days that Pepsi had never even challenged Coke, the Datsun Z cars weren t even on the market let alone be in their 300 series, the Cincinnati Reds were winning a lot of baseball games and the professional basketball team in the state was known as the Stars. Boy have things changed. the lines of lessons and start at about $15. In some cases the younger players take the camps or clinics simply because they feel without them they wont make the high school team when they get there, since the camp is usually run by the high school coach. This isnt the case. EVEN WHEN the youngsters get into high school they feel then they better go to those camps to get the exposure of the college coaches, who run those programs. As mentioned when this guy was in high school there were very few camps in the summer. Those months were left to us for our own enjoyment and 1 honestly feel we THESE CAMPS arent cheap. A basketball camp can run from anywhere in the $30 to $120 range, the soccer camps are from $ 10 to about $100, the football people are in the $40 to $120 range, while the golf and tennis camps are more along Continued from last page Moss, Clark Mower, Richard t. They could very easily dish over a lot of money for these summer endeavors, especially if they have more than one athlete in the family. Its got to be expensive for good old mom and dad. SURE THE older guys can earn the money and pay for some of these camps but what about the ITS GOOD that the kids have something to do. It's good that these coaches take the time to offer the camps but its got to be tough on the dad's pocket book. comes along and they have to move. 4-- 14-- 6, ner in Region One and in the Weber State Track and Field Invitational. Chris Wehril of Salt Lake City (Olympus High) has also signed to attend Weber. He was the 84 winner in the 1 10 high hurdles and his time of 14.63 was the best time in the entire state this past season. ANOTHER signee was Mike Coe of Roy High. He was an outstanding three sport athlete in football, basketball and outdoor track. He finished second in the Utah meet in the 800 meters State ( 1 .58). He was quite versatile, running events from the 400 meters to the 3200 meters. Robert Durtschi of Sky View High will also attend Weber. He chamwas the 1984 Utah State pion in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. He had the best time in the entire state in both events (4.19.3 for the 1,600 and 9:28.6 for the 3,200). JOHN JUSKO of St. Josephs High School in Ogden will also attend Weber State. We used to have one in my neighborhood that we played on a lot but there are houses on that property now. All of these camps mean well. Theyre all trying to improve the kids in a certain sport. But at the same time they have to remember that the parents can only spend so much on camps. If a kid tried to go to every basketball camp offered the parents could spend over $500. OGDEN - James Moore, the state champion in the pole vault, signed a letter of intent to jump next season at Weber State College. He was one of six excellent athletes signed to attend by Coach Chick Hislop. MOORE WON the 1984 title the highest that with a leap of Utah any jumper went this past season. That leap in state helped lead his team to a third place finish in the team standings, and just four points away from a state championship. Afterall the grass only grows so fast and can only be mowed so often. The camps also offer a kid the chance to play somewhere, which isnt bad. As one mother noted, T remember when we were younger the kids in our neighborhood would go to the open field and play baseball or something. The space just isnt there anymore. There are so many teams and so many sports everything has to be structured. I bet my kids havent played in three games that weren't organized and with officials.
