Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, MAY 30, 1984 Member Gives Guide Dog member Althea Telzerow of Layton presented "Josette, a German Shepherd Dog to Ms. 4-- Melita Waters of Santa Ana, Calif, at recent ceremonies of the San Rafael, Calif. School for the Blind. THE PUPS are born at the Guide Dogs kennels. At 3 months of age they are placed in the homes of members who will housetrain the pups and teach them social skills. T his socializing by the family helps to lay a solid foundation for the future work of the dogs as Guide Dogs. When the dogs are about 18 months old they are returned to the school to begin a five to six month program of Guide Dog training ind with California structors. Following the completion of training the dogs are matched with blind people enrolled at the school. unit comTHE NEW person-do- g inpletes an intensive, residence course at the Guide Dog school culminating with an informal graduation ceremony at which member presents the dog the to the new graduate. Although it costs the school about $ 10,000 to produce a single person-dog unit, there is never any charge to the blind person.
