Show t WEEKLY ) I NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MARCH 25, 1981 REFLEX-DA- VIS dram Admgm J. Suitt, Best Big Man Around and the state heavyweight crown. Strength is the only word to ue when describing this young man. He delights in lifting the iron stuff. He benches 415 pounds no that's not a it's really 415 pounds which is a school record for a school that is know n for their weightlifting program. He squats 500 and deadlifts 5ys pounds So James isnt just big he's also very very strong I. AM ON HASNT always been home foi this child of an Air Force man "I was born in Birmingham. Ala., but from there have lived in Italy, France, Germany and Japan. Its fun to move around as a youngster but by the time you get in junior high you want to settle down in one place, I'm glad it was Layton because as far as I have noticed the 1 must admit though I respect his words mote than his sidekick Billy Packer w ho is simply a cheerleader for the ACC when it comes to basketball. They kept saying that the only reason that BVU wasn't on By DANE WIGHAM enjoy a good college basketball game as much as the next guy but those announcers are about to drive me batty. An believe me I dont have far to go to 1 television more this year was that they were in the wrong time zone. I maintain it's because those folks feel basketball is only played in the east. reach there. mis-pri- 1 JAMES SUITT By DA LAYTON coaches here are the best E VMGIHM James Sum stands head and shoulders above the crowd Not onlv physically but also when it comes to honesty. STANDING 6'4 and 260 pounds, big James would stand out in ust about anv crowd but its his honesty with himself and the world that leaves the big impression on you. Until his junior year in high school, James was always out on the basketball floor doing his thing in hoop but then he turned to wrestling when the basketball program no longer needed him. COACH HANSKN asked me to come out and wrestle. He said he thought Id be good at it. Besides then he told me about all those little trinkets you win to put on your and those liked. had seen them guys wearing them around school and thought my jacket would look good wiili some on them." At first the sport wasn't kind to James as he was demolished on his first couple of outings. He drew the misfortune of going against two of the best in his first two matches but he remembers those meets and took out some revenge of his own before his career was over. letter-jack- 1 JUNIOR, his first year ever on a wrestling mat. big James came up with a record which included a region title and fourth place in the state meet. This year he went 29-with another region crow n AS A 27-1- 2 3 around." Those coaches have played a big part of James' life. "As a sophomore I remember Coach Gary Hansen getting me interested in lifting and he said to put in the time, growth doesnt come overnight and that you have to work at it. applied that to everything I do." 1 BF.ING IN the heavyweight class. James Suitt has his own views on the big boys. Most coaches just get the biggest guy in the school to fill a void. But size is not the rule, its the quicker and mobile heavyweights that are popping up now." Football is James' first love r and he hopes to get to a school eventually but right now he's heading to Snow for two years of football r schools think "If the I need to refine my tools then r Ill do it, but I'll play for a school before it's over." four-yea- four-yea- four-yea- ANYTHING THIS young man puts his mind to he does. he only started Example wrestling last year and in two yeais he went ftom nothing to a slate champion. His coach, Mike Hansen, was pleased for him. "I really appreciated James. He's fun to have around and I razzed him a lot but really look up him for hanging in there. No one has ever improved the way he did over two years. HE 5 ANTED to wrestle and won a state title, and lots of little trinkets Now he wants a college football career, and he'll have one. thought that Howard Cosell took the winter months off but if you ask me he has returned to do basketball and is using the name of A1 McQuire. The reason for comparison of the two is that they are very opinionated and you have to sit there and listen to it. The roll of a color guy doing the games is to throw little tidbits at the audience, but these two go overboard a lot. I ALWAYS ANOTHER ONE of their fav oi ite expressions is to say that a certain player does something as well as anyone in the country Such as: "no one penetrates better than him, or "the quickest hands in the country, the "best big man in the nation." the "best little man in the nation." the "best sixth man in the country," the "best guy never to play a minute dinThese aie all ing an actual game in the country. legitimate words out of their mouths. The big thing that stuck in my craw , tnough, was the number of times we had to watch the highlights. And they were the same highlights each time, At halftime, after the game, at the start of the second game, at halftime of that game, during commercials, during lunch, dinner and breakfast. They kept saying, "for those of you who may just have joined us. For heavens sake they did this every five minutes. . AL SITS there and second guesses the coaches involved in the game. Rarely does he use the phrase, "in my opinion, he simply states what should be done. Need remind Coach McQuire that he won only one national title in his reign as head coach. If he knew all he professes to know about the game then his clubs would have won the crown each year. 1 HE IS entertaining to a point and almost enjoyable to listen to but then all of a sudden he gets on an ego SO FOR maybe one oi two viewers wc had to keep watching some poor guy from Kansas State trip or something and starts coaching each side. Will Uphold Tradition? reLayton he posted a cord in the 105 pound weight class which included a first place finish in region and a fifth place spot in state. This season he posted a 26-record, another region title and the state crown. One thing he remembers about his sophomore season was the weight loss. "I lost 20 pounds to go at 105 and at the time I didnt think it was worth it. I walked around school looking like one of the poster children for the underfed. I looked half dead at times. Now I believe it was worth it all." 25-1- 5 WIGHAM By DATE LAYTON Layton High wrestling is getting a name for itself. One of the things its e state noted for is for champions and with junior Robbie Zamora claiming the crown at 12 pounds. The Lancers have high hopes hell continue' the string next season. HIS BEST friend, Dwain Martinson, capped off the 1 AS AN EIGHTH grader. and won the Robbie went district meet. He then wanted to become the only wmestler at Central Davis to win two straight titles. As a ninth grader he came back to accomplish record and just that with a first place again. , 10-- 0 His only loss came in a duel meet with Millcreek wfien Dave Merrill beat him bad. "1 was scared of him and didn't wrestle well at all and he just pinned me. Hes a good wrestler. In the finals of district though I got even beating him he noted with a small grin across his face. 15-- 1 THEN AS A sophomore at poundsthisyeartowrestle it, he added. AT THE FIRST of the season Robbie, by his own admis admit that announcers have their spot in television but not when they start to take away the attention of the game as some ot them try to do. Don t sit there and argue over something dumb, get on with 1 announcing the game. MAYBE COLLEGE basketball is getting to the point of Monday Night football, you know the old turn the volume off and simply watch the athletes do their thing. Some interesting facts came up during all those television games over the weekend. First ot all. the NBA draft should be fun to watch this year because of the number ot first round picks available. At last count, at least 131 players were called "certain first round pro picks" by the commentators doing the game. REST ASSURED, then. Jazz fans, that help is on the way with all this talent out there. Dan Maroney Named Chairman 1970-7- 1 and '72. he was pool manager of the Warwick I. Country Club in Warwick. R. He moved to Lyman. Wyo. in 1976 where he taught HIS CO UH, Mike Hansen, ho is building up a reputation around the state for his tough wrestling teams, has high praise for his junior star. "He has as much talent as anyone I've ever coached. He has no style that you can put a finger on, he has his own style. He has a knack to always keep people in trouble and he's learned a lot from his mistakes He'll try something and maybe make a mistake but he'll never elementary physical w and he was a lot happier about (hat. He doesn't look that strong, but then what does, but he can throw the weight up. In the bench press he has gone 160 pounds. He squats 325 and deadlifts 375 pounds. "The weights are a definite advantage at Layton. The coaches stress it and they know their stuff and how to use 12 him. Stiengih is a main part of his style but it's his quickness that lets him get by most people. "Stiength plays a roll in wrestling but knowledge and quickness are my two big things. Think all the time, be aggressive and not to wait for anything to happen, you make it happen, he explained. ONE MIGHT report here that Robbie only had to drop five at I ATCHLD the same guy score ov er 40 points in one game but they all came on the same shot. My wife thought the other team should start guarding 4 6 two-tim- string this past season by winning his second straight title and Robbie wants nothing more than to duplicate that fete and then get a college offer and wrestle for the same school as Dwain. It was Dwain that got Robbie interested in the sport of wrestling in the eighth grade. He told me had the potential to be good at the sport so I decided to give it a try." sion. cot a little high on himself but then was knocked oft by a kid from Brighton and then again by another from Roy. "I hose two defeats humbled was overme in a hurry. confident and not working hard in practice but I came down to earth in a hurry." lose the ball and North Carolina go down and scoie. Their next move is to call each home indiv idually and invite them to watch the highlights. make the same mistake twice." The style he has is his own and so are his goals.
