By DAVE W1GHAM first two years By DAVE W1GHAM of running in school this likeable runner has proven himself as the best in his class in both WITH the exception of some parents and maybe a few girlfriends, these athletes very rarely get the recognition they so richly deserve. Their names arent men- tioned around school like the football players but they have just as much pride as the gridders when it comes to their own sport. IF havent guessed by now Im talking about the cross country runners from each of the schools. This area has some of the best at this sport in the state as the results of the recently held state meet will show. Leading the onslaught of local talent is the super sophomore from Davis High f: f? t: iw t; i: s I YOU S K V r.J: RAYMOND Jones added a fourth place position to the Davis squad, while Reid Neumann placed 11th and Chad Jones 15th to place the Darts m second place m the team standings with 53 points which was 18 points behind the winner South. Over in the 4A race View-monKelly Gibbs closed out ts a fine high school cross country career with a fourth place finish. That finish helped the Vikes to their fine third place team finish behind East and Bonneville. BRIAN McDonald of the Vikes came in at the fifteenth position to aid the Vikes in their efforts. Bonneville High from Region One placed second despite running without the services of their top runner junior Ed Eyes-ton- e. who led his team to a second place finish in the 3A realm. The Bountiful team also ran without their top runner Dave Krivanec who would have WAYNE Pinto, who last year as a .'reshman placed second in the state meet, became the first sophomore to win the title as he ran the course at Sugarhouse Park in 16:08 which was a good probably placed in the top runners. CERTAINLY all these runners and everyone else who competed in this sport for the year deserve a round of applause. Anyone who can put in the time and effort that these runners put in, for as little recognition and fan support that they get, earn the respect of this reporter. nine seconds ahead of the next runner from Provo High. Pinto has turned into one of the top runners in the history of the sport. Already in his IV cross country and the mile run in track. There will 376-345- THE question comes up because the Darts lost their quarterback, Ryan Hill for the rest of the state playoffs with a shoulder injury he suffered in their quarterfinal victory over the American Fork Cavemen. In that game Hill had led the Dart offense to 28 first half points before leaving the game just before the half with the shoulder injury. Word from Davis Coach Jay Cullimore was that they operated on Ryan last Saturday to place some ligaments back in the shoulder. Not only will Ryan be lost for the remainder of the football season but hell also be out for the first part of the basketball DEFENSIVELY the Darts are still a strong club with the likes of Bret Webster, Brad Hatch, Thor Angle, Scott Fletcher, Jeff Starkey and all the others that makes things hard on opposing ball teams. 4 After their impressive win over American Fork, led by the running attack, the Darts would have to be favored in this battle. THAT PUTS the pressure of stepping in as the quarterback on the shoulders of junior Todd Van Brocklin. Coach Cullimore indicated Watch, although Ryan Hill is a great one, as the Darts show they are more than a n team. one-ma- that Todd has been at the helm of the Dart junior varsity dub all year and has been used m varsity practice so he is no stranger to the offense. According to his coach, Todd's main asset is his hard throwing arm, which brings up the point will the Davis team change their game plan with Hill out. The coaches indicated that Mike Mounteer will take over on the defense but they really dont know who will do the kicking chores. So as you can see Ryan Hill was a very valuable part of the Davis club. However a team doesnt go undefeated with a one man show and the Darts still have their top running backs geared for the Judge contest. Mrtch Keck, Keith Malnar, Dave Lloyd and Matt Gregory are all anxious to do well on the artificial carpet this coming week. They really arent that picky as to who hands them the ball. ack? high In the world of high school, and college, athletics there is a certain breed of competitors.
