More than 85 percent of the property owners along the d highway objected to the improvements More than 66 percent objection was needed to abandon - the project, according to Mayor state-owne- Lewis Shields CITY engineer Byron McGregor told the council that the city attorney had checked the protests and found them to be sufficient to reject the proposal But, he added, those who protested can not change their minds, officially, at a later date One spokesman for the protesting group said, You want an us to approve improvement district but you dont tell us what it will cost BUT MAYOR Shields retaliated by stating that he and the entire council had spent many hours on the project which had been proposed largely as a safety measure to get students off the street and provide a safe walkway to and from North Layton Junior High School Mayor Shields also noted that the state $22,500 appropriation would have cut the original cost of the project by the property owners BUT NOW what happens to the state money which was not used for the specified job9 City Atty Bruce Barton said he believes there are several alternatives, including the possibility of usm" the for a similar money improvement district on the north side of Antelope Drive he said, BUT, 1 dont have sufficient data to determine at this time what can, or cant be done with the money. I do know that the money must be used or encumbered before July and can only be used on a high1 state-owne- way.
