AUGUST 2S. 1976 Cheerleaders At Layton Gain Honors At a recent competition meet at Rice Stadium in Salt Lake City, the Layton High School cheerleaders placed as one of the two top groups in the area. IN THE competition cheerleading groups Salt Lake City, Davis County, Og- den, and Northern Utah Counties participated in the contest. The Layton group came home with a very large trophy to display in their school, and also were given the honor to represent the North and South football teams at the Cerebral Palsy benefit game All-St- that was played at Rice Stadium last week. In addition to these the teachers eagerly welcome the students back to another outstanding year. PRINCIPAL Berg is asking that the parents of the morning and afternoon kindergarten students come to school with their child the first day. The kindergarten groups will not be held the full time and the students will be able to return home with the parents. Band officer were elected recently at Davis High School. Mrs. Beth Jarman of Bountiful this year has been awarded $2,500 on an international fellowship to complete her doctorate at the University of Utah. Miss Sara Voit of Layton in April received the state scholarship of $1,000 for advanced work. Other recipients in the local area to receive scholarships from Utah State Delta Kappa Gamma have included Mrs. Bessie Stevens of Clearfield, Mrs. Allez Ashmead and Mrs. Marjorie Thatcher of Kaysville, and Mrs. Vivian Beattie of Bountiful. Womens Festival Is Aug. 28 Utahs second annual Womens Day Festival, sponsored by the Governors Commission on the Status of Women, will be held Satur- day, August 28, at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. THE celebration will conclude Womens Week in Utah proclaimed by Gov. Calvin L. Rampton to recognize the contributions and achievements of Utah women, and to acknowledge the 56th anniversary of womens suffrage, August 26. Beth Gurrister, chairperson of the Governors Commission on the Status of Women, says the festival was inaugurated last year in celebration of International Womens Year. The festival focuses on the substantial and diverse contributions Utah women have made to the growth of our state and nation, says Gurrister. We hope all Utahns will join us in the to this salute achievements of women. ACTIVITIES will begin at 4 p.m. at the Liberty Park Bandstand, where Utah painters, potters, weavers, jewelry makers and other craftswomen have been invited to display their art. There will be softball and volleyball for the whole family and special activities for children organized by the Utah Girl Scout Council, Montessori School and the Ogden Chapter of the National Organization for Women. Dancers will perform continuously at the bandstand until 7 p.m., when an allwomen dance band will take the stage.
