Probably not. since hes had so much fulfillment in the past seven years. watching kids excell in all 17 events. But the event that chills the spine, just a little over the others, is the hurdle race. It was in the hurdles that Flint gained track stardom during his competing days. Flint must have been living in another world as he watched Mike Fahnert and Tracy Pitkin, two Clearfield seniors, make history in the hurdles last Thursday. Fahnert broke the school's record in the high hurdles on Thursday during the trials. He came back the following day to defeat the field and win the region title. Pitkin too, was just as impressive. He said the feeling was indescribable, on Friday, as he netted the region title in the 300 intermediates and broke the school's record in the process. Fahnerts weakness in this race was taken care of during the region meet. My weakness is a slow start. If can break out even with everyone else. Ill usually do pretty well because the strength of my run is in the last two or three hurdles and the stretch to the finish line," two-da- y 1 Y" X. ' ''' V; Vs f '?' The kids made a goal to get to state but were not really happy about how they accomplished it. We were the fourth place team from Region Four and were ranked ninth in state heading in, said Bitner. 4-- 5-- 3 1 -0 ACCORDING to Bruce Bitner, Davis soccer coach, the Darts are playing their best soccer of the year. But he also explains that it's crucial that they are because Woods Cross is in perfect position to capture the state title. JUNIOR SCOTT Argyle was the hero in the victory as the Dart goalie batted down a penalty shot to help preserve the victory. Alan Jones scored the only goal with an assist from Brian Bacon. Davis scored another victory the following day over a solid Olympus team who Coach Bitner felt was a little over confident. "I think the city schools sometimes forget the power that exists in the Davis County schools. When there were eight teams left, four were from Davis County. Likewise when four teams remained, two were still from the county. I think our kids wanted to beat Bountiful more than any other team in state. Its a personal thing for them said Bitner. But -0 300-rac- nt THE DARTS have been receiving some strong support from Brian Bacon, Scott Argyle, Chad Morgan, Brett Johnson, Chris Johnson, Brad Kooyman, James Hall, Eric Jensen, Martin Klien, Trent Cox, and Alan Stenquist. Both are prodegies of the indoor track circuit. It was like another new season before outdoor track began. Without it. they wouldn't have gained the extra steps they had on their competitiors. Fahnert was never sure he'd win a region crow n. He just wanted to run track. One day Flint told him hed run the hurdles, not leaving him any choice in the matter. Coach Flint just has a way of motivating you to do things.. -- Victims In Past, Now Conquerors Keith Duncan I'm supposed to take 21 steps before the first hurdle jump," explained Pitkin of his championship run. But let my mind v onder. which made me stutter a little. At first I thought I'd blown the race but after thinking how Coach Flint would chase me around if I lost. Mike was a little tired when it came to the finals on Friday. Thats probably why I was hitting so many hurdles." he said. Pitkin knew all the marbles lying in front of him Friday in i. race against the likes of Bonneville's Lynn Cash and Layton's Steve Barker. Mike, although beaten his first two years in track, never quite lost hope. As the season progessed, he began to win in dual meets which helped boost his confidence. The 15.1 he ran in the last indoor meet certainly established a base for the outdoor meets. Mike gave up basketball this winter to make it a full season on the indoor circuit. You can't help but notice that the star high hurdler is trying to make up in track what he lost out in football last fall. He suffered an andle injury and saw limited action all fall. Fahnerts toughest competition in state will come from Jensen of Hillcrest and Dan Bramall of East. For Pitkin, he could hardly hold in the excitment about winning the region title. Ill wake up tomorrow and wonder what happened to me, he bubbled. It's nice to see these two kids senior year go out in style because theyve put in so many hours. They only know how how many hours its been and thats why I can respect both of them so much, praised Flint. The Clearfield coach honored Fahnert and Pitkin as true tracksters in the truest sense of the word, because they've been around for three years and worked from the bottom to the top. Without question, it was the indoor circuit that gave me my base for the outdoor season, said Pitkin, I also realize a big part of my success comes from the competition Mike gave me. There wasn't a time this year when we werent trying to push each other. |
