Show i WEEKLY f REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 10, 1977 IS Darts Drop Two Region Games By DAVE WIGHAM negicn Two: Who's Got Iii3 Best Team In Wrestling This Year? By DAVE WIGHAM Once again its time to de- termine just whos the best wrestling team in Region Two this year. The battle to decide the champion will begin Wednesday Feb. 16 and will conclude the following night on the 17 at he Clearfield high gym. ON THE basis of the dual meet results between the schools of the region, the Viewmont wrestling squad should be favored to win the title. In competition with the other region teams the Vikes had a perfect mark, Lay-to- n was second with a record, while Bountiful was third at In a wrestling tournament though, so many things can happen that the team championship doesnt have to go to any of these three schools. If a top wrestler gets injured or sick it could cost the team the for one championship example. ANOTHER factor in a tournament such as this is the number of pins a team is able to accumulate during the two day event. For each pin a wrestler earns, he picks up two extra points for his team toward the team title. Last year Viewmont won the title beating Clearfield by five points. During the tournament the Falcons only had two pins while the Vikes had five. That means the Vikes picked up 10 extra points on pins, while the Falcons only picked up four extra and that cost the Clearfield team the Dulpas (BL) YAZZIE should be considered the heavy favorite in this division; he is not only in undefeated region matches, but hasnt lost a match at all this year. Merrill and Wardle both gave Yazzie good matches but both would have to have wrestled extremely well to beat Yazzie for the region title. 119 L. Shulberg (V) Lawrence (Bo) Klecker (C) Clemente (L) THIS division is up for grabs for any of these four wrestlers. The wrestler from Viewmont is ranked number one but all of them have lost and all of them are capable of beating the other. A solid toss-u- p here. 126 lb. Dugmire (L) Taylor (Bo) Jone (C) Kimball (V) 1 3-- THIS IS another anybody who wants the title can have it class. The wrestler that is on that day will win the title. As of late, the Bountiful wrestler, Paul Taylor, has been wrestling well, and several coaches feel hes the man to watch in this class. 132 Pierce (L) Elton (Bo) Phelps (V) Higley (C) THIS SHOULD turn into a two man fight for the title with a possibility of the third ranked wrestler getting in the act. The finals will probably be Pierce and Elton, but dont rule out Phelps. 138 Klecker (C) Preece (V) Dugmore (L) Leonardi (O) title. BEFORE each tournament each wrestler is ranked in his weight class according to his record. If a region won-los- s kid is undefeated in region, then hell be rated number one; in this way the number one and two wrestlers can be put in different brackets and they should meet in the finals. Viewmont is the defending region champion, in fact, the Vikes have won the team trophy for the last two years. Of the 12 weight classifications the Vikes have six of their wrestlers rated number one. Layton has three these four, or any of the other three in this class, are capable of winning. Klecker and Dugmore are both seniors, so they have been through the rigors of the region meet already. 145 Hubbard (BL) (Bo) Martinez (C) Torrez (L) ANY OF Lud-dingto- n wrestlers ranked number one, while Clearfield, Bountiful and Ben Lomond each have one top candidate. THE FOLLOWING are the top four ranked wrestlers in THIS IS a battle of one experienced senior against two very enthusiastic sophomores. Hubbard is the senior with all the savy and confidence while Luddington and Martinez are both their various weight classifications going into the meet. 98 lbs. 1. Sweatfield (V) 2. Merrill (Bo) 3. Guiterrez (L) 4. Garcia (C) sophomores. was SWEATFIELD undefeated in the region dual meets but he wrestled at 105 which is the weight higher than this one. As a junior the coaches feel that he has a better chance of taking both region and state at this level. The other three are all sophomores so the experience factor goes to Sweatfield as a heavy favorite to win this category. Everybody has a day or a week that they would like to either forget about or start all over again. Last week was such a week for Davis basketball coach Mike Gardner as he saw his Dart ball club drop two Region Five battles to drop their record to 4-- division. He was undefeated at 98, but is at a higher class for this meet. THE SLEEPER in this division and in the meet could be Shulberg from Woods Cross; he hasnt really wrestled any varsity matches, but has faced the majority of opponents in this meet. 112 lbs. 1. Yazzie (V) 2. Merrill (Bo) 3. Wardle (L) 4. 5-- 0 region with Jordan and Tooele. Bingham, the team that beat the Darts Friday, is all alone in first with a perfect 0 mark. If you think the weather was cold outside the Dart fieldhouse on Friday, you should have gone inside and seen how cold the Davis team was from the field. The weather was warm compared to the shooting of the Darts. in this weight, Snow has never wrestled in this (BL) THIS IS rated to match Kittrell and Calobeer in the finals. In the region dual meet Calobeer lost by one point which indicates the closeness of these two. Mills is considered a threat but will have to come up with a great performance to win the title. 185 Beddingfield (V) Gor- - 3 9 contest to Tooele. THE TOOELE game was supposed to be the Danny Frazier act as the talented Buffalo player was getting all the raves and press clippings for the Tooele bunch. Davis held him to just 8 points as he fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Going into the fourth period it looked as if the Tooele team had things wrapped up with a 12 point lead, but the Darts werent going to lay back without a fight as they clawed their way back into the game trailing by only five at one point. Darts couldnt get their AT THIS time two mre Buffaloes, Killpack and Woodruff, went to work inside against the shorter Darts and the Tooele five slowly pulled the game out of reach. For Tooele, Woodruff led the scoring brigade with 17 while Killpack added 15. shooting eyes focused all night and finally lost. BINGHAM was having little trouble putting points on the board as Fred Roberts led the barrage with a 24 point effort. Bingham also gave the fans a lesson in shooting foul shots as they went to the line 27 times and converted on 26 of those tries. Bob Payne was the only Dart to hit in the double figure mark for the Kaysville five as he hit for 12 points to lead the Darts offensive show. ONE BRIGHT spot for the Darts last week has been the Davis was led by Steve Crid-dl- e who hit for 19 and Bob Paynes 18 points, but this was too little too late. DAVIS must now try to get their act together in preparation for the home stretch of Region Five action and another trip to the State tournament. dw It is no surprise to anyone this season that Kaysville Jr. High is winning basketball games. First Place Position Layton came out of the starting blocks like a team to determined prove something and never looked back as they downed the Scots of Ben Lomond and earned a tie for first place in region action. MAYBE WHAT that Lancer team was trying to prove is that they are a much better team than the one that lost to Viewmont a week ago. And prove it they did. This was the same Layton team that had climbed to the league, this was the Layton team that everyone expects to be around when the Region title is decided. don (BL) Hammer (Bo) Overly (L) ALTHOUGH only ranked third some coaches feel that Hammer has been wrestling well and should meet Beddingfield in the finals. In the dual meet the Viking wrestler pinned Hammer but things might change in the region meet. Hwt. Layton (Bo) Ehin (L) Smith (V) Chapman (C) BOUNTIFULS Dean Lay-to- n should be considered a heavy favorite although he lost to Ehin in the dual meets. Ehin is only a sophomore and if he gets one or two region wins under his belt he could gain the confidence necessary to win it all. If all goes well and those who should win do win then the Vikes should win the championship. But how many times in sports do things happen like theyre suppose to. dw from the outside. GILBERT AND Roberts led the Lancer charge with 22 points apiece, that accounted guards, Weaver and Woodward, added a total of 20 points to that tally to give the 20.44; Randall & Brown 20.31 won over Evans & Flinders 20.49; Grant Workman 20.17 won over Northridge who had no time. Runaway Ranch 20.23 won over Gene Green to earn the win. But then again if a team isnt going to let you get the shot off without a foul, theres nothing you can 20.31. WINNERS IN the Derby Category were: Lane & Noel 22.23 over Neil Christensen 22.53; Jacoby & Jacoby had a bye with a time of 22.66 and do. Tad Billmire, playing on an injured knee, played a good game defensively and added six points to the offensive showing. Billmire seems to be and unsung the player for the Lancers.
