DALLAS IS the son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Lyon of 519 The fifth grade classes of Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Davis celebrated a Hawaiian Day last week at Layton Elementary School. ALL THE students of these classes dressed in the traditional Hawaiian costume and wore a Hawaiian lei that they had made from crepe paper. Early in the week each class decorated large bulletin boards with pictures and facts of Hawaii. Songs of the to islands were taught the children by Mrs. Davis an4 they presented them to the bther jsWdents of the school during the lunch hour. Chris Gardner. Grand champions were Allison Layton and MRS. DAROL Caswell, mother of one of the fifth grade students came to school and showed some slides of Hawaii and sang and played her guitar for them. Hawaiian lunch, special for the occasion and the room mothers had a fresh fruit banquet consisting of fresh pineapple, coconut, apples, bananas and Hawaiian punch. Mrs. Anderson set this traditional Hawaiian day six years ago and the event has taken place annually and has been enjoyed by many students since that time, dc -- 773-85- sport. We're loaded, no knits Entire stock School Picture Award FURTHER, THE newspaper was incorrect as you will note on item 18 of my bid that the total cost to the school was no charge for the photography and the prints. It appears that the school district is devoid of the fact that there were five bids requested and that each bid should be considered on its own merit. IT APPEARS that all the bids were lumped together and then divided between two studios with no reference to other facts concerning the location of the studios who bid on the contracts and the dis- tance the students must travel. Reference to item 11(c) concerning the purchase of film. All the schools purchase the film and pay to have them processed. I am waiting for Davis High School to take their film 25 miles. Salt Lake City, to have it processed over-nigas required by the terms of the bid. Jaylynns just can not give them that service. Reference to item 11(a) concerning extra trips to the school. The bid was no charge for taking the pictures. Davis High has been using the 3X4 2 preview photos of these group pictures. IT WOULD appear that they would continue to do the same, d however with an open-ende- question as item 11(a) is, Davis High could have the photographer taking well. This is a total of 50 miles per trip, a total of 200 miles of driving per student. With the present gas rates, it will cost each student about $6 to have their picture taken-- a total cost of $8,400. By having the portraits taken in Kaysville and then picked up, returned, etc. in Kaysville, the total cost might reach $100. Most of the students could walk. (b) THE TOTAL driving to Salt Lake City and return is 480,000 miles. It is highly possible with the high number of miles on the road that a student could be killed on the road. Saving the life of just one student is worth keeping them off of the highway. Again, driving on the Kays-ville- s city streets is far safer than the freeways. (c)- . All money spent by the students parents for photographs will remain in Davis County and the additional taxes collected in Davis County is spent in Davis County. Another question I have is if the bid is for a certain school, ' why doesnt the school ever see the bids prior to the selection of the photographer? It would appear that each school should have something to say about who is going to take their portraits. PERHAPS THE school does, but it seems to be after the fact rather than to make suggestions as to which bid they prefer.
