Sending out resumes to potential employers is the path most frequently taken. Wlial should a contain? resume What are the do's in don't and . is preparing one? Since the job market has been light for college graduates lately, it's important that you the best prepare resume you can. in M.ssible the best That's true way. even if you're not among the new crop of graduates. A personnel manager in a large multinational company tells me he reviews from 600 to 700 resumes a month. Seeing them in that great quantity, he admits that at best he has to scan them, giving them about a minute and a half consideration. What does he look for? Here are some of his secrets: The resume should be no longer than two pages. It should be typewritten. It should be meticulously neat, in the words of the personnel man. Make doublv sure that it contains no misspellings or grammatical errors. In preparing your resume, start with the present and work backwards. List the various jobs you have held, even though for sum they only have been part-tim- e mertime jobs. Be sure to list references, so the company can make a check with former employers, if they wish. Give names of immediate supervisors, addresses, zip codes and phone numbers. (This extra effort illustrates that you are a careful worker.) Give an idea of the kinds of things you have accomplished in your jobs. Neither be too boastful, nor too modest in doing this. Send a cover letter with your resume. Take time in preparing this letter. It is It is also important that the cover letter be written individually. Never address your cover letter to "Dear Sir or "To whom it may concern. Learn the full name of the personnel man and his exact title and address it to him by name. The cover letter should be no longer than a half-pag- e of typewritten copy. This means three paragraphs at most. It should arouse the interest of the person reading. I)o some homework on the company you are writing to. Indicate in your letter that you know something about the company and have selected it for a possible future career because of its growth potential. Personnel supervisors are amenable to a little flattery about the company, so long as it is not overdone. One more important hint: Be persistent. That personnel manager tells me he is most impressed with the letter that says, "I w ill call your office within the next few days to arrange an appointment for an interview." Being human, he dislikes more work--bu- t he is impressed by such a letter. Most important, it requires him to respond in some way. The personnel man reluctantly admitted to being impressed by the persistent job hunter who repeated sending in his resume and a fresh cover letter three or four times when he did not get a response the fiist time. Finally-- d ont wait for one exchange of correspondence before you try another company. Send out as many resumes as of course, with individual you can-a- ll, cover letters-a- nd follow up quickly with phone calls. Good luck with your resume-an- d with your new job!
