Many people are wondering why the big deal about who wins the Region Two basketball title, after all the top four teams get a chance at the State title and thats what matters. 1 THINK it's time the region champions of each region get the recognition they deserve. Once the State tournament begins, few people even remember who won the Scores of Davis County bowlers will be competing this weekend in the 41st annual Utah Bowling Association Championship Tournament in Salt Lake City. - EVERYONE, in Salt Lake City and Provo anyway, will tell you the teams to beat are Skyline and Provo. These two powers have been placed in the same bracket in the State tournament. The first place team from Region Two is not in that same bracket. The champion of this league will be in the other bracket and wouldnt have to play either of these two teams until the final game. shouldnt winning the league crown mean more than just being in the opposite bracket than some other team. I dont think or advocate that only the region champs go on to State, but I do believe its time people gave the region champions the just reward and recognition. BUT AGAIN, WHICHEVER team, Viewmont or Layton, ends up with the championship, they should be proud and be recognized for their accomplishments. After all, what have they been doing for the past eight weeks, if its not trying to win the Region title? dw Alright r:on, Time For Everyone To Enercise The Utah Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (UAHPER) is out to get all people on their feet during National Physical Education and Sport Week, 1977. March WHILE theres a growing awareness that physical activity is of vital importance to mental, physical and emotional health, UAHPER officials feel that most Utahns -particularly adults - have not accepted responsibility for their own beings. Were beginning to get excellent programs into our schools now, explains Dr. Robert Leake, Physical Education and Recreation Specialist, Office of the Utah State Board of Education. PHYSICAL education programs start in elementary school today, and the emphasis is on developing excellent movement skills for all children; finding and correcting motor difficulties at an early age. physical Sequential education leads young people then into team sports; competition; lifetime sports. By the time they finish high school, most students should have integrated good physical education practices into their life styles. Look for the Falcons to play their style of ball control basketball while the Vikes like to run. THE GUARD matchups go to the Vikes with Walker, Lalli or Lowell Oswald getting the nod over Nabor and Parry. Key to this contest will be the Vikes ability to stop the quicker Clearfield big men in WITH THE league championship on the line and the revenge aspect in the back of their minds, favor the Vikes to win this in a close battle, dw forgotten it. Coach Jim Cleverly is hoping for a little breathing room in this contest, as he has sat through two extremely close ball games in the past weeks. tirely. THE FIRST meeting was supposed to be a breather for the Vikes, but they ended up losing it by two points, so they expect the worst. This time around, the Vikes will be ready for the Falcons. Whenever Viewmont and Clearfield get together, its a very physical game. The Viking players werent expecting that type of game the first meeting, but are expecting the same treatment this week. THE GAME actually means more to the Vikes in terms of league standings, but that doesnt mean to say the Falcons dont want to win. A Vike victory would give them undisputed possession of the league title; a loss would open the door for a tie with Layton providing the Lancers win. Both clubs are well balanced in scoring with a different player emerging as the star or hero each week. For the Vikes they send the likes of Tim Eden, Court Wilkins, Kevin Walker, and Mark Lalli against the Falcons Scot Balaich, Scott Wallace, Brent Rose and Royce Eves. COACH Cleverly feels he has the game plan necessary to beat Clearfield this time around, which indicates the neath on defense. In the first meeting Kevin was a guard at both ends of the court but in recent games hes been at a foiward and sometimes the center spot on defense. Falcon Scot Balaich had things pretty much his own way in the first contest as his quick moves seem to take the taller Vikes by surprise, but with Walker under the bucket his quickness will neutralize the Falcon quickness. THE FORWARD positions will be almost a standoff with Eves and Wallace going head events are also slightly off the pace (1,556 compared to 1,590), as are the doubles events (778 to 795). Thats right Highland won Region Three but few people realize that. The region title should mean something to people. TAKE REGION Two this year, what good will it do Viewmont or Layton to win the title. So they get to tell everyone when theyre older, they won the Region title. For one thing the seeding, or better still the placement of the first place team in this region is important. 2 lead at half time, then coasted to a 9 victory and the tourney championship. Bemie Meitchen collected 28 points for the victors, Troy Reich added 17, with Steve Jackson hitting for 15. 90-8- By DAVE WIGHAM TO GO THROUGH a tough league schedule, and all leagues are tough, and come out on top, the team and school should feel proud and gain some sort of recognition. Maybe what they ought to do to bring the region title back into perspective is to have the State tournament with only the region champions invited, then watch the scramble for the title. In the second and final game. Lifestyle jumped to a Even knowing that they had been eliminated from a State tournament berth didnt stop the Bountiful basketball team from giving it everything they had in losing to Clearfield 1. THE GAME wasnt actually decided until late in the fourth quarter, when the Falcons slowly but surely pulled away from the frustrated Braves. Earlier in the afternoon the Ben Lomond team had beaten Ogden to capture the fourth State berth from the league. Bountiful jumped out to one of their patented early leads as the Braves led by five at the end of the first quarter and by one at the half. the third period the Braves could only manage to score two points while the Clearfield team pumped in eight. Neither team put that many points on the board in the third period as both went to a controlled offense. As has been the case throughout the year, the offensive star for the Coach BUT IN Robison five was Dale Ohlson with 24 points on the night. One of the sad things about the Braves not qualifying for the tournament is that the area basketball fans wont get the chance to see Dale in action. DALE received little help from his teammates as the next highest point output was by fellow guard Marty Malmrose who finished with six. On the other side of the scorebook, Scot Balaich threw in 15 for the winners, with Rose adding 14 more for Coach Reids troops. IT WAS interesting to see how the Falcons would bounce back after dropping two straight games last week, but they proved that they havent given up on anything yet. A win this week against Viewmont would put the Falcons in good shape for the State tournament. Clearfield is the type of team that can drive opponents wild with their style of play. In high school its expected to make turnovers and mistakes, but Coach Reid expects nothing but perfection from his troops. THE Clearfield control game is as good as any around, if they get the lead on a team and go to this game, iP almost impossible to score without fouling them. This year many Falcon victories have been won at the foul line. Clearfield plays the team game to its utmost. Usually each week a different player will be leading scorer, thats the way Coach Reid likes it; sometimes another team can beat one man, but to beat all five of them is another task. THE FALCONS have a solid hold on third place in the region, a victory over Viewmont this week could improve their situation in the league standings if Layton loses, and the Falcons would love to go into the State play with added confidence. sociations.
