Could you repeat it, please, because I take those pills. ANSWERLINE: Therapeu- tic estrogen hormones which can help correct the hormonal imbalance of menopause are useful and important to many women. However, because recently-reporte- d statistical studies have associated estrogen intake with an increased risk of a form of uterine cancer, it is important for women like yourself to have a checkup, including a pelvic examination and Pap test, every six drug given to a patient be of value without undue danger. For that reason, all drugs in this country must pass very, very, rigorous testing and cross-testinThe scientific community here works with investigators abroad for the benefit of all. A store owner tells us: Last week I put a No Smoking Please sign that I made myself right on my counter. -- MANY of my customers said that they were glad to see it. Id like a more professional looking sign. Where can I get one? writes: Answerline: Your local American Cancer Society has a sign that says, Thank You for Not Somking. Its yours for the asking. months. THESE recent studies are a reason for caution not alarm - and your physician is best qualified to answer your questions about hormone treatment for you. A high school teacher I just finished a magazine article that left me with the impression that there is a conspiracy to keep some cancer drugs from patients. These drugs are available in places like Mexico and Germany. Is this true? ANSERLINE: There is no conspiracy to ban or prevent the use of drugs which could save, prolong or ease the lives of cancer patients - but there -- is a deep concern that any says: I was using a mirror to check my throat because it felt sore. While my throat looked all right, I did notice some white patches on the roof of my mouth. Is that a cause for alarm? Answerline: White patches in any part of the mouth or on the tongue might possibly be a warning signal. A READER YOU should definitely bring this condition to the attention of a physician, or your dentist. Both are trained to recognize possible cancer. It probably is not cancer, but if it should be, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the outlook - that is as true for oral cancer as it is for all forms of this disease. -- A MOTHER writes: My son is in a class with a little boy who is being treated for leukemia. While, the child is doing well, I cant help but be afraid that he will give the disease to my son. Answerline: The only thing that you have to fear is the superstition that cancerab-is contagious. Your son is solutely safe. BUT your attitude might deprive him of a friend and cause grief to the other child. Perhaps a talk with your sons pediatrician might help put your mind at rest. I A policeman writes: gave up cigarettes two years ago after my uncle died of lung cancer. Do other people need that kind of warning? Why do so many still smoke? ANSWERLINE: The American Cancer Society estimates that 30 million Americans have quit smoking cigarettes. For those who still smoke, perhaps it is the belief that it cant happen to me that keeps them from joining the nonsmokers. Lung cancer takes many years to develop, and it may be hard for the smoker of today to imagine himself or herself as the cancer patient of tomorrow. AN AS you local American Cancer Society get the message across by becoming a volunteer speaker before school and social groups. You know the hazard, and you have proven that its possible to quit. What is enQuestion: dometrial cancer? could help your ANSWERLINE: Endometrial is a form of uterine cancer which strikes mature women. It is a disease of the lining of the womb. Since it frequently occurs the time of during menopause, women should be extra alert to anv unusual or adnormal bleeding and not dismiss it as part of the change. A woman past the childbearing years should also remember to have regular pelvic examinations. This form of female cancer can be successfully treated, but early diagnosis is important. A middle-age- d man writes: My father is in his 70s and is a very stubborn man. He has been having some bladder problems but he refuses to see a physician. What should do? I ANSWERLINE: Perhaps hed be more willing to listen to someone his own age. Also, your local American Cancer Society Unit might have some specific leaflets you could give him. Naturally, if you have a family physician who knows your father, that is the first person to whom you should turn for suggestions. YOU might also gently remind your father that some illnesses just dont go away by being ignored. They have Who Knows? Name the birthstone and flower for September. 2. If a woman has had one breast cancer she will not automatically develop another. WHILE women who have had cancer in one breast are at some risk of developing cancer in the other breast, only a small percentage ever do. The risk is somehwat higher for women who develop the primary breast cancer before the age of 50. What all this means in terms of the individual is that every woman who has had cancer in one breast must have the other breast examined on a schedule suggested by her physician. SHE should also practice a breast practice all women should follow on a monthly basis. BSE instructions are available free of charge from local ACS Units. 9, 1850. September September 9th. 4.
