Show WEEKLY -- REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL. SEPTEMBER IS Tom Now Job Corps TeUHs Mamttamedl Gearfield Job Corps official tourned Job Corps facilities with city officials from Clearfield, Syracuse and Layton Monday to explain how control will be maintained when the 300 plus women enter the Clearfield Center. ROBERT Marquardt, group vice president and director of educational training, said directors will have control and cited positive results from other job corps centers which have become coed. We can be tougher in our acceptance ot students and have more control than a public school, he said. The women will enter in corps in accord with the civil rights laws prohibiting sex discrimination. The 1,000 student center is administered by the Thiokol Corp. under a grant from the federal government. SHERIFF William Dub Lawrence said the corps has had considerable impact on Davis County, resulting in some negative problems. Mr. Marquardt admitted that corps officials have not always been close enough to law enforcement problems, but said the center is tightening up. Mr. Marquardt said, when the women arrive, a female police counselor will assist Clearfield police. Corps officials also plan for a courtesy patrol or trainees to ride with law enforcement officers. SHERIFF Lawrence said the sheriffs office will need more than 90 days to gear up for any potential problems caused by women in the corps. There are currently no jail facilities in Dayis County for women. Bernie Diamond, director development, said there has been a tightening of securuy. Police Chief A.O. Most return to their homes to find employment, Mr. Marquardt said. Sheriff Lawrence tioned whether the 93 percent placement figure was meaningful when dropouts were not included in the statistic. Mr. Diamond responded, saying ideally corpsmen are kept for five to six months. But, if they stay 90 days, the center feels it has been a positive experience for the corpsmen. CfirDs Clearfield Job Corps Center has received the Outstanding Center Award from the Department of Labor. Although the corpsmen come from poverty families in 28 states, the center ultimately hopes to be a divisional center, taking only students from this region. When women enter the center there will be no change in population. Skill offerings will remain the same with the exception of a business and clerical course which will be added. trained in the class could provide free clerical work in Clearfield, while they do their six week STUDENTS MR. RAKU IS an ancient method of glazing and firing hand-bui- lt and wheelthrown pottery which produces some very unusual effects and has piqued the interest of many contemporary ceramists.
