Utah Wildlife And Recreation Federation Hold Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the Utah Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Federation was c Travel Lodge held recently at the in Salt Lake City. The conservation and outdoor activity program was highlighted by speeches from Utah Governor Calvin L. Rampton and Lynn A. Greenwalt, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Salt Lake City Mayor, Ted WilTri-Ar- son, also addressed the convention briefly. THE MEETING followed the theme of The Future of Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Beyond the Bicentennial. A ORV panel discussion of The Future of included Travel on Public Lands panelists from the National Wildlife the Federation, the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation. Other topics included Water quality program; Greenwalts speech, The future of wildlife hunting; and two presentations by Division he of Wildlife past, Resources staff members-Tof pheasants future and present presented by Darrell' Nish, division upland game supervisor and the "Future 208 given by Norman V. Hancock, chief of game management. of our deer herds RAMPTONS remarks centered on the skill necessary to manage Utahs wildlife resources. He commented that tlrc educational and skill levels in the Division have steadily increased in the last decade. He stated further that pressures on wildlife habitat are increasing and that his hopes were for his predecessor to continue to support the development and maintenance of the state s wildlife resources. ' Ali could earn million in the series of bouts hes scheduled for the Muhammad $25 next twelve months. HE received a million and a half for the April 30 Young go and looks forward to a return Greenwalt began his talk by saying that mother nature, contrary to many popular schools of thought, would not take care of things by our simply leaving things alone. He said that the majority of Americans are.not related to the land and that basic understanding of natural interactions and life cycles are missing from a large portion of citizens in todays society. GREENWALT emphasized that animals are not like people and that those are the feelings, the misperceptions, wildlife managers must correct. Increased demands on the resources and the steady, increasing depredation of wildlife habitat are two of the major problems facing the future of both hunting and wildlife, according to the Wildlife director. WE MAY HAVE twenty years to set things right, so that wildlife will have its fair share of attention, so our children will have these wildlife resources available, he said. He expressed many ideas for correcting the problems and avoiding future difficulties. The fact that sportsmen must police their own ranks and the general public must begin to understand the complicated structure of land use and the resources were two of the ideas. HE CONCLUDED by saying We have a moral obligation to give our children the opportunity to make the same mistakes weve made.
