Although still in his early 30s, Mr. Cantelli has been guest conductor of the Philharmonic-Symphon- y for each season since 1951, each year assuming greater conducting responsibilities. The young maestro actually started conducting at the age of 5, when he led his fathers military band in Novara, Italy. The handsome young Italian first came to the notice of America as a discovery of Arthuro Toscanini. The great Maestro first heard him while listening to one of the young conductors rehearsals for a concert at La Scala, Milan, and was so impressed that he returned to attend all rehearsals and the subsequent concert. Two days later he invited Cantelli to come to New York to conduct. He took over Toscaninis baton each year from 1948 to 1954 as guest conductor of the NBC Orchestra. Mr. Cantellis successes have been as numerous in Europe as they have been in America. Following two years internment in a German prison camp, he made his first post-wa- r appearance conducting the Orchestra of La Scala, followed immediately by performances with the Symphony Orchestra of Radio Torino and later concerts and opera performances throughout Italy. The industries, already two of Utahs largest enterprises, have been vastly increased by the current uranium boom and by recent oil strikes. The University of Utah has set up several technical training departments to keep pace with these expanding industries. Specifically outlining educational opportunities is a new booklet, Mineral Industries Education in Utah, recently published by the University of Utah Press. Dr. John R. Lewis, head of the University of Utah department of metallurgical engineering and author of the pamphlet, lists fuel technology, ceramics, meteorology, geography, mineralogy and geophysics as some of the new departments which have been created in the Universitys college of mines and mineral industries to meet the need for special training. The booklet also contains information about the departments of geology and metallurgical and mining engineering. Another section details training of graduate students and lists some of the research projects currently under- as Salzburg and Lucerne and has been closely associated with the Philharmonic Orchestra in London since 1951. Following his exciting impression with the NBC and New York Philharmonic Orchestras, he was sought by the major orchestras of United States. He first appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra and in the 1950-5- 1 season with the Pittsburgh and San Francisco Symphonies. Later he conducted the Boston Symphony and the Chicago Symphony in addition to his regular guest appearances with the New York Expands Mineral and Mine Courses He has appeared regularly at Santa Cecilia in Rome since 1946, as well as making regular appearances at the Maggio Musical Festival in Florence. Since 1948 he has been the chief conductor at La Scala during its spring and fall concert seasons, as well as having taken the La Scala orchestra on tour on the continent and in England. He has been heard regularly in major European festival centers, such NO. 7 All U of U Utahns to Hear NY Symphony In Provo, Salt Lake Concerts 11)35 e d n r n n .f t .f e |
