BARLOW, MGR. s. a. heCk 307J4 3br.ru HAVEN which still holds to traditional states rights doctrines, and which is almost 100 per cent opposed to the President on such great issues as the Administrations civil rights bill. The situation is similarly confused within the Republican party. Its most effective leader is Senator Taft, a conservative who believes that government is the greatest menace to the freedom of the people. Yet it also has a liberal group of aggressive, such Morse as Aiken and Senators, and Smith, who are continually restive under the present leadership, and who go along with much of the Truman program. It can be effectively argued that a great political party is big enough to contain men of widely varied views. However, as the voter doesnt have present time, the much choice. In the last Presidential election, for instance. Governors Dewey and Warren campaigned on a program which, in essence, was not basically different from Mr. Trumans. They offered the voters about the same things that Mr. Truman offered them, but said the Republicans could do it better. This attitude, as the results proved, was not convincing. Mr. Hoovers idea is simply that the parties stand definitely for specific, opposed policies. Time will tell whether that goal is possible of achievement. ever-growi- ng The Low Down From Hickory Grove At times, she looks as if our country had just about lost its equilibrium. Baffled might be a good word. Kinda off the track and not seeming able to get back on. The President of a school there in West Virginia Doctor Stewart H. Smith of Marshall College sums it up pretty good. He says, the U. S. A. is killing time in an age of triviality. We use, he says, all kinds of escape mechanisms to avoid being serious about the things that matter. We go in for anemic soap suds opera, time killing breakfast-club gab, bloodcurdling crime stories. We tune-oStephen Foster with his banjo beon his knee and tune-i- n milWe he 20 bop. says, buy, lion comic books each week. But agreeing as I do with this West Virginian, I also have hope. Take it last week in California in Pasadena the folks voted nearly 3 to one there, against expanding the modern Freud or what have you trend of free expression in the school house. Those folks there, I say, have something. The place to apply the brakes first on triviality is in the school house. The Pasadena folks have lowered the boom. I give em 3 cheers. And now outside the school house, what. Well, I say the need there is AEsop. Of all the things most people choose not to be or be known as is a sucker. To avoid being same, AEsop is champion. Yours with the low down, JO SERRA. ut DEPORTMENT IN CONGRESS By DON ROBINSON in the American Press If I visited Congress every day like a Washington correspondent does, I might become accustomed to the bad manners of our national representatives. But since I only get to Washington now and then, it i is still very shocking to me to see our nations leaders putting on a daily exhibit of outrageous deportment. I use the word deportment because I imagine most of the thousands of daily visitors to Congress compare the a House of representatives with classroom of mischievous school hoys and vis what would inhappen to Junfie lolmveil such depiorf oo uihioil In him tiomatowi nub Better Paint AT Lower Prices ECONOMIC HIGHLIGHTS General" Paints That Happenings ture of and Internal - ; lie I - .chooi. a best oirrsinE I. .S.5.
