Then, too, unless you really give clothing that "stitch in time," your clothes budget is unreasonably high. Those who like to sew make a point of mending and doing it with some degree of skill as well as pleasure, but then again, many women Just don't like it. Fortunately, its a Job you can learn to like and do well since its an easy job filled with satisfaction provided you have the right equipment and proper organization. One woman says she likes to do her mending before washing because it gives her so much satisfaction to be able to wash and iron clothes without having to stop to threads of fabric may be used by hand for small holes. An embroidery hoop or a flat darner is recommended for materials such as table cloths, towels, napkins and similar items to hold them taut as you stitch. It the fabric is sheer, move the hoop enough to make a loose stitch. For heavy materials, do not move the hoop much so that you can get a short stitch. Use strong thread tor machine darning, but not heavy enough to pull away from thin or weakened fabric around the hole. Fine mercerized cotton .is best for linen dams such as will be necessary on towels, table cloths, napkins and doilies. The ideal composition for Spring Is Lenesta's little sailor of navy and white striped belting, banded in wide lipstick red grosgrain ribbon. Note the narrow brim which the hat uses and the ascot of belting to match the hat. Matching red is used to line the ascot. Use Extra Materials To Reinforce Weak Spots When holes in a garment art large, do not attempt to dam them to fill in the material. This is too much of a job, and the dam may soon give way as its too weak for a spot which may be large enough to need a patch. Patch pieces may be obtained from other garments of same material which have lost their use. Trim away the ragged edges around the hole and cut a square opening exactly along the fabric edge. Baste the patch under the hole, matching the grain of the patch to the garment. Dam on the right side, stitching back and forth across the edge of the patch, running about five stitches beyond the edge of the patch, then turning and crossing at the comers. Remove bastings and trim edges off patch to the stitching on the wrong side. When buttons, snaps or other fastenings pull holes into material, remove these and insert mending tape to reinforce the fabric, underneath the material, or right between the fold if there is one.
