Ds Union leaders are demanding another general wage increase; further liberation of welfare, pension and benefit plans, and liberalization of vacation treatment, as well as many other items. They are broadcasting much misleading information and are threatening to strike if their demands are not granted. Let us look at the facts in connection with this controversy. Telephone employes have actually had nine general wage increases in the last ten years. Average hourly wage rates have more than doubled since 1939. HOW DO THESE PRESENT WAGES LOOK TO YOU? Top rate telephone craftsmen in Kaysville City are paid a regular base salary of $70.75 per week. The basic rate for similarly ex, perienced switchboard operators is $41.00 and for service assistants $48.00 per week. These rates are for a regular year-aroun- d week. Because the telephone business is a seven-daaround-the-th- e clock business, substantial extra both groups pay for overtime work for night, Sunday and holiday assignments.exThe Company Has made tensive surveys throughout this daytime 40-ho- ur y, e-a- rn territory and these show that present telephone wages and working conditions are very good and that they compare favorably with wages and working conditions in the communities in which the Company operates. The Companys earnings are so low that it has had difficulty in securing additional capital from investors to provide plant to meet service requirements. Therefore, any increase in telephone wages would mean that much higher rates for telephone users. HOW DO THESE WORKHIG CONDITIONS LOOK TO YOU? pay up to one year at full pay. Similar benefits for accidents (on or on- 1. Sick 2. the-job- 3. 4. 5. 6. Matching Lounge Chair ). Death benefits up to a years pay. Pensions based on salary and service, but at least $100, including Social Security for employes over 65 with 20 or more years service. Up to three weeks vacation with full pay. Eight paid holidays. We think these facts suffi ciently answer the misleading and inaccurate statements being made by some C W A Union leaders. We can see no justification for the inconvenience to the public which a telephone strike would cause.
