State Division of Parks and Recreation supervisors say the natural feed on the island is as lush as ever because cattle do not graze here anymore. There are also 30 natural freshwater springs on the island, good food, good drink. When the island was privately owned, cattle consumed most of the feed, and the island supported only a small bison herd. Now, bison are kings of the island, and the State treats them Four people are aln e LAYTON today because of the efforts of Becky Guthrie. The Layton High graduate had the necessary training and was in the right place at the right time to perform lifesaving heroic deeds on three different occasions. The most recent was in March. Its a wonderful feeling to save a life, she said. I had training in high school as a and just completed advanced individual training in the National Guard. As soon as she is 2 1 , Becky plans to attend the Police Academy at W'eber ing, Becky said. Witnesses said Becky saved the child from bleeding to death, and then comforted the child until emergency medical personnel arrived. Officer Rod Dickson of Layton Police Department was the first officer on the scene. If not for Becky Guthrie's actions.it would have been a lot worse than it was and we have her to thank, Dickson said. When the car accident happened, I didnt even think about it. I just knew what to do, she said. Two years earlier. Becky was working at a Layton bookstore when an State University. For her actions, Becky is being recommended for the Utah Medal of Merit. The 700 bison also are accustomed to the little trip they take each year from the south side of the island to the north side to spend a week in corrals. Perhaps they know they will receive free vaccinations to fight against schedule. Last weekend was the 13th Annual Bison Roundup on Antelope Island. With the help of 300 horsemen, three helicopters and 11 chase vehides, the remainder of the bison were herded into the corrals on Saturday and Sunday. Each year the State sells about 150 bison to a variety of groups andor individuals. The herd on the island is one of Clipper Today Correspondent - KAYSVILLE "Educate before medicate.
