When people pay attention to God in worship and praise, they live that way If they pay to attention evil spirits, they live that way" a bringing BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Today Staff Writer Halloween is just around the cor- ner, and in many area households, kids are choosing their costumes for the big night and candy is being bought to satisfy the sweet tooth of all those little ones. But to many; Halloween is something other than a fun evening for the kiddies. It is a night of evil, that parents ought to think twice about letting their kids participate in. Its a high festival for Wicca (the religion practiced by witches) said the Rev. Duane Jensen, pastor of Bountiful's Grace Lutheran Church. Halloween began as a pagan festival for the dead, which, in the minds of many, has become nothing more than an evening to dress up and go and partying. The ancient Celts called the festival Samhain (pronounced sow'an) and observ ed it to celebrate the onset of winter. The name Halloween was derived from the Scottish celebration, Halloween. In ancient Ireland, the Druids, (the priestly caste of the Celts), sacrificed to the deities by burning victims in wicker cages. AD other fires were to be extinguished and relit from the sacrificial fire. They believed the veil between the living and dead was at its thinnest this time of year, making communication between the two worlds easier. On Halloween Eve, they believed the souls of the dead freely roamed the land of the living. I put out a caution because the roots of the day are evil," Jensen said. of human Jensen warns evil is here. He points out the media publicizes Halloween m all its scary violent and ugly aspects. That depersonalizes Halloween. he believes. And yet locally; the evil of the holiday is not as apparent as in some localities. Bountiful's Police Chief Paul Rapp said while there may be a rise in criminal mischief this time of year, he can't say any type of criminal behavior is particularly high on Halloween night. We can't make comparisons for any particular day: We dont keep stanstics that w ay: All I can say is that we don't put any extra officers on that dayf he said. For parents who may have concerns about Halloween. Jensen urges they use the occasion as a teaching moment to contrast good and evil, fear and peace, violence and gentleness. Parents may consider alternative celebranons focusing on good. life. pointing to the sacrificial aspect of the day. which still exists today for some. He notes hospitals and some police stations candy for razor blades and needles and children are cautioned about eating fruit or homemade goodies for fear of poison. Also, the Human Society and other animal welfare groups put out a warning to keep pets indoors on Halloween night. Jensen said symbols have meaning and the symbols of Halloween are those of fear, violence and death. They appeal to the worst in human nature, he said. He said the spint of Halloween is historically evil as shown in the sacrificial aspects. This is the night they are stirred up" Those symbols are seen all over during October, and the holiday's commercialization distresses Jensen, who sees it as being driven by profit ber is Clergy Appreciation HAIR EXTENSIONS Do You Want Author speaks on 'Creation' JlderHunsaker Elder Bryce M.
