Show A8 Thursday, October 14, 1999 Davis County Clipper Darts and Knights D meet up on Friday Both team's region rankings waiting to be determined. BY JORDAN LIVINGSTON Clipper Today Sports Editor On Friday night. Region 1 rankings could be determined for two teams, as the Northridge Knights and the Davis Darts face off in a tough region rivalry. It all comes down to Friday for us, said Northridge head coach Fred Fernandes. With a win over Davis, the Knights could possibly solidify a third place position in the region. If the Darts come out on top, they are in the running for a second place finish, depending on the outcome of their game next week against Clearfield, who are currently in ond with a 1 record. The Knights are coming off a 4-- sec- ' 47-4- 0 victory last Wednesday over the Cottonwood Colts, in which they got three consecutive touchdowns from Anthony Fresques. Quarterback Jeff Kusuda had a good night as well, throwing four touchdowns in the game. Northridge had a 2 lead at halftime, only to let the Colts back into the game. We called off the dogs last week, said Fernandes. We couldve put up 80 if we wanted. The Darts are also riding the reigns of a victory, as they defeated the Layton Lancers Davis' head coach Jim Dickson understands that in order to beat the Knights on Friday, they'll have to shut down their potent offense. Were going to have to not give them a good field advantage, said 40-1- 27-2- 0. Dickson. Cottonwood gave them good position last week. Weve got to keep their offense off the field. Dealing with Fresques is another concern for the Darts. Although he was out with a knee injury earlier in the season, Fresques has performed WILDCATS continued from A7 display of speed, beating practically the entire Woods Cross team, to score her second goal of the game, and putting the icing on the 1 vic4-- tory. Unfortunately, Fremont's impressive performance was tampered, as they began to simply play dirty soccer for the remainder of the second half. ; . Shawnee Clarke and Boyer became petty thugs, hitting Wildcats players from behind, and slide tackling every chance they got. The official could not seem to come to terms with this unnecessary play, disagreeing with each other on numerous calls. They are a high energy team, said Rigby, But its a shame the official couldnt keep control of it better! After several fouls on Fremont, Megan Slater was finally yellow-carde- d for a brutal tackle. The Wildcats put in a valiant effort against the physical play of Fremont, but were unable to muster any real offensive penetration. Their closest scoring chance came when Chelise Van DeGraff headed a Hertig comer kick, only to see it miss the goal by inches. Although the Wildcats got the season ending loss, Rigby is proud of his teams efforts over the course of the season. It will take a while to evaluate superbly, even though he s not all the way up to par. Hes still not 100 percent, says Fernandes. But it seems he gets better every week. If he's going to play, hes going to be a problem! said Dickson. Were going to have to take him out of the game one way or another Along with a recovering Fresques, Northridge will be getting help from a few key starters who have been out with injuries most of the season. Junior Gerald Bourdeau and senior Kenny Moon will be plating in their first full game in weeks, after being used only sparingly last week against Cottonwood. Both suffered knee injuries early in the year. The Darts have also experienced the basic injury problems that come with the game of football, with a couple of fullbacks ailing. Davis has gotten a few players to step up as of late however, especially Joe Toone, who ran for 91 yards on Wednesday. Northridge is expecting big things from quarterback Kusuda, who appears to be in the best form of the season. After struggling against number one Skyline a couple of weeks ago, Kusuda has looked stronger. After one more week of practice, he is really feeling comfortable, said Fernandes. Another week will help him that much more. The Darts quarterback situation will also be one to watch, as Davis has been starting sophomore Kellen Fowler. He's done a good job, said Dickson. But the key word is sophomore. There are times when he'll be good, but he'll make mistakes! Dickson is optimistic about the rest of the season, and moving into the playoffs, with his teams high position in Region One. Were in a situation where we control our own destiny! he said. If we could win one of the next two, we should get third place! I remember lions and billions of dollars to play with, you have to deal with a $450 salary cap. Dont worry, you dont really have to fork out the when I was a teenager and all these fantasy and rotis-seri- e leagues were all just starting up. I refused to involve myself in any of them, because I was convinced that they were strictly for geeks, lf obsessed with statistics and that could- bills, think of it as Monopoly Jordan Livingston Money. nt pry themselves away from ESPN for 10 minutes. Well, finally I accepted the reality that I am in fact one of those geeks, and Ive enjoyed a little bit of fun in fantasy leagues since. Is this column all just a shameless ploy to try and get you, the Davis County public to join the Fantasy Basketball League that were sponsoring? Well of course it is, but its also my aim to get all of you to realize how much fun were all going to have doing it together. Isnt that what a community is all about? Togetherness? Anyway now that Ive thrown up, I know that all of you, at one time or another, have second guessed management, coaches and owners of professional sports franchises. Think about it. How many times have you caught yourself saying, Yknow, if I were the owner Id go out and get (fill in blank), or Boy, old what's his name would never play on my team. What more perfect time than now to show your expertise, and join the league. By joining the fantasy basketball league, you could pick your own team, and show the world how knowledgeable you really are. This is how it works. Instead of bil Then.you get to pick your favorite players, out of all the guys in the NBA. Think about it, for probably the first time in history you can be in charge of a basketball franchise thats based in Utah that can actually get big name players. You wont have to hear about lifestyle issues, because as far as your players are concerned, this is the best place on Earth to play. Now, this is where you have to be careful. Sure, we all would like a team consisting of Karl Malone, Tim Duncan and Shaquille O'Neal, but remember your salary cap. These cats cost upward of $60, and your money could run out really quick if you dont watch yourself. Another area you want to use caution is how your team earns points throughout the year. Your teams points are based on the players individual stats over the course of the season in the big production areas like points, rebound, assists, etc... This can get tricky, because a guy like John Stockton gets a lot of assists, but not a whole ton of rebounds. Geveland's Shawn Kemp scores a gazillion points, but doesnt rack up too many assists. Therefore, a guy like Jeff Homacek, as much as we all love him, may not be the best choice. There really are only a handful of players, like Malone, Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Grant Hill, that excel in most of the categories. Here in the newsroom at the Clipper, Im trying to get all the editors and writers involved, and weve had a few discussions about who would be the best choices for a cham- than that cocky punk, let me try and motivate you a little more. I have often found myself with the opinion that basketball fans in Utah are not the most educated around. Many of us seem to know everything there is about the Utah Jazz, but dont exactly have a plethora of knowledge about the rest of the pionship team. Now, we have some pretty educated basketball people here, so it's my NBA. Here's your chance to prove me, and snobs like me, wrong. We will be printing the weekly results of the league here in the sports page. There will be people from all over the country fighting for the best teams, and I fully expect to see plenty of Davis County citizens in the results challenge to the people of Davis County to try and put together a better team than us. This is where you really are going to have to do some homework. Ive already picked up copies of every piece of basketball reference material there is. Ive got the basketball guides Street and Smiths, Sporting from News and even Jim Fiests Basketball every week. If you have the best team by the time the season comes to an end, there are some pretty sweet prizes to come your way. If one of you beautiful people happens to win the trip to Vegas to create a team with an NBA legend, please invite me, the lowly sports editor who talked you into joining the league. Preview. I have even hired a few of my own personal scouts who are at NBA training camps all over the country, finding the top players. I plan to get the highest level of talent for the lowest amount of money. By the time the season starts, I will have barely reached my salary cap, and will most likely have the top team If sometimes professional sports seems at if it has forgotten the fans, this fantasy league is a great way for us to take part, and feel some control. So let's have a blast with this thing. Just turn a couple of pages for the entry form, details and rules. every week.
