Assisting Applegate will be Mike Moss, Rod Dickson and Jeff Bearnson as they start their schedule Dec. 23 against Roy. We have a tough schedule, said Applegate. We will play teams like Olympus, Brighton and Hillcrest, and these games will help to get us ready for another tough region. Right now the teams to beat are Northridge and then Cottonwood. This region is always tough and we will have to play as a team and see what happens, .but this is a good group of players and we are ready to see what happens in the season. pre-seas- 'Cats need junior performance this year BY JORDAN LIVINGSTON Clipper Today Sports Editor WOODS CROSS - The Woods basketball team is hoping to improve upon last years uneventful season. The Cats were only able to come up with three wins in the 9 season, as they had a hard time finding bright spots outside of starter Ben Stock, who is playing junior college basketball in Colorado. We didnt have a real strong class last year said Woods Cross head Cross Wildcats 98-9- coach Rick Winder. This year, although the Wildcats do have more depth physically, they are still are lacking in big men, forcing them to play a game based around smaller players and more guards. The one large body under the basket this year, comes in the form of 65 Josh Smith, who will likely find himself playing the center position most of the year. "Hes quick and he runs the court well, said Winder. He also is very sound fundamentally Winder is also facing the facts of only playing five with seniors on the team, and hes With a limited number of upperclassmen. Winder is forced to rely on a few juniors to carry a brunt of the work load. Brock Beck sure not is the projected starting point guard, which will be after seeing a little varsity time ' last starting. Included the senior bunch Jason is, with year. Other' juniors include Chris McNeal, a who is er accustomed Conradi and Wildcat to playing at forward, although thats not his quarterback Mitch Malmrose. only option. He can play quite a few positions, said Winder. Matt Larson, a 63 senior, will also be an important part of the team, along with Seth Lowe, who will be playing only his second year of organized basketball. Winder knows that that these kids will have to play like seasoned vets if the Wildcats are to succeed. Theyve won a lot in high school, he says. They can learn to work harder, but they like to win. Theres some good leadership in this group . If they can take the others with them, they can help develop our talents. Another advantage helping the Wildcats is an improved coaching staff, one that Winder feels is his most experienced and mature ever. I think our staff will make a great difference, he said. Weve got guys that know and have worked with kids. The Woods Cross staff includes Mark McCleery, over from the Bountiful program, of Utah player Mitch Smith and sophomore coach Dave Simon. After a disappointing football season, 'Woods Cross needs a pick-u- p from the basketball team to restore confidence in the sports program. Weve got to teach these kids to win, said Winder, who thinks Cyprus will be the strongest team in Region Five. The will be important. We can be competitive if we get some early wins under our belts. The Wildcats season starts on the 24th against Judge, and region starts up on January 4, with Olympus. pre-seas- Jazz look young against Spurs BRAVES continued from B7 SALT LAKE CITY - Did Greg Ostertag really block Tim Duncan's dunk? The Jazz proved that trying new things eventually pays off, beating the defending San champion Antonio Spurs 5 on Monday. n The duo of John Stockton and Jeff Homacek their counterparts Avery Johnson and Mario Ellie 30 to 10, with Karl Malone adding 20 points and 10 rebounds to the effort. The Jazz are looking a little different this year, confusing the Utah loyals. Fans are afraid-to-chan- and seeing less youngsters like Scott Padgett are getting key minutes. Bryon Russell is the Jazzs go-t- o guy in the sixth-ma- n position, and Stockton is looking to score first, dish second. If it will take time to hone these new plans, it sure worked on Monday, as the Jazz held David Robinson to 12 points and five s, fouls. this, or one of the other unbalanced sets. This allows the defensive ends and outside linebackers to be a little more cautious of their outside contain responsibilities when they see this formation. On the defensive side, they stunt on 24 percent of the plays, with an even balance of the linebackers taking their shots. The middle backers are the most dangerous though. It takes the coaches about thirty-fiv- e minutes to go through roughly five possessions for both teams. Wall has his team set up watching the game film on a big screen with a projector. Yes, Im a dork, and I occasionally watch some MTV Anyway, MTV has been doing their annual Music and Sports festival. What this is, is a collection of extreme athletes, competing in their respective sports, to the tune of the latest band. Picture BMX biking to the pleasant sounds of Korn. Try and imagine the highly competitive act of bungee jumping, to the highly intelligent music of Kid Rock. You get the picture. But, it really is pretty cool. Whether or not you can stomach bands like Limp Bizkit, watching guys do 360s, 720s and what ever other numbers you can think of to represent twists in the air, on their bikes, skateboards, roller blades or snowboards is fun. And it goes well with the music. The whole thing has got me thinking. You see, I love music just as much as Ive ever loved sports. I'd probably make a better record critic than I would a sports columnist. Music and sports have always been my two main loves in life. What Ive been thinking of is, if music like Marilyn Manson goes so g well with acts such as what skateboarding on a half-pipwell with of would music go types more conventional sports? Maybe we could have the annual Music and Golf festival. That would be an extravaganza that featured lounge singers like Tom Jones or Barry Manilow lulling us to sleep as they crooned behind the ninth hole. Isnt televised golf simply a Sunday afternoon sedative as it is? NASCAR events (yes, for the purpose of this column, I will acknowledge NASCAR as a sport) could go hand in hand with a healthy soundtrack of banjo music. Just think of the beauty. Hundreds of race can going round and round the track, while drunk rednecks howl to the sound of Dueling Banjos from the movie Deliverance, The same could be said for televised fishing on TNN I suppose, but the banjos would have to play at a much slower pace. I think that football should be played to a classical soundtrack. The power and strength of the sport matches some of the might of classics such as Beethovens fifth, or some of the more dark classical death-defyin- e, Jordan Livingston pieces. Heaven knows that some music on Monday Night Football would be a major relief idiocies of from the honky-ton- k Hank Williams Jr. In fact, why not just let Boomer sing the opening theme song. It couldnt be any worse than his commentary. The obvious musical choice for The reason basketball in being, is that half of the guys in the NBA have their own rap albums as it well-writt- hip-ho- is. Checking out the sounds from the new Shaq-F- u CD, while watching Shaquille O'Neal brick free throws would be great. And how about scoping Chris Webber while he cusses out officials while jamming to his Christian rap album, under the moniker. The only option for baseball would have to be It would be a shame to not join the two greatest creations that America has ever produced. The only proper way to enjoy this fusion would be to watch baseball in your Chevrolet, driwhile listening to ving your mom to the store for apple pie. On the flip side, to watch or play soccer, you would definitely have to listen to some form of world music. While baseball is a product of America, soccer is a product of everywhere but America. Reggae, Calypso, Salsa. Bagpipes or the Beatles will all do just fine for soccer. .... Yes, sports would be better ijE. we incorporated a musical element to it. What would you rather hear, Ron Boone falling asleep in his coffee, or some nice tunes. So lets not let MTV have all the fun. Other sports can be hip too. I'll even take the job for music director for sporting events throughout the county, and Im always open to rock-and-ro- rock-and-ro- ll, s. ciently. So much for the old 8 mm projector.
