Gregory, Farmingtons first newly appointed full time fire chief. The volunteers do a great job, but there are organizational and administrative things that dont get done. Fire fighting is more than just going out to fight a fire any more, there is administrative work, paper work, training programs, medical concerns, and the actual fire fighting, said Gregory. Theres something about building an organization, that I want to participate in. We had 16 applicants for the job of fire chief, said Mayor Gregory S. We interviewed seven and was our unquestioned choice. Larry Each applicant was asked questions Bell. that were very difficult. We had some outstanding appli cants, said Gary Elliott, city councilman. The State Fire Marshal gave us very tough questions and guidelines to help us make our decisions. I served as Farmingtons assistant fire chief a number of years ago and it was one of the best experiences Ive ever had, said Gregory. Dave White has done a great job and Im grateful for people like Joe Wilcox who have worked for years as volunteer firemen for Farmington. We have a great group of men who are giving, giving, giving to the community. I want to take some time to get to know .them and the program here in Farmington and then set some priorities and get everything down on paper. Gregory comes to the position with a broad business background. I will get the opportunity to apply the things I learned at the university and in business as the regional franchise manager for Pro Image out of Bountiful. Training is very important to me. Coaches will tell you ball games are won on the practice field. In fire fighting, its training and working with the equipment, working together, and f however, is a shift in the areas of new enrollment. Theres a lot of growth going on, but the folks moving in have different demographics than weve seen in the past, Ronnenkamp said. Where traditionally new students have come into the school system at the elementary level, more are now coming in at the junior and senior high levels. What were seeing now is families moving in who may have one elementary, one junior high and two high school-ag- e students. Its a much different kind of family moving in, Ronnenkamp said. This years enrollment figures are interesting. For example, there , ; But according to district predictions, the enrollment drop is only temporary, Elementary schools will see a drop over the next three to five years, but the birth rate is expected to rise again, bringing more youngsters into the system after that. We spend an awful lot of time tracking the growth rate, Ronnenkamp said.; We track migration through the cities and county records and follow the birth rate. The temporary drop in enrollment will give the district a breather. Many of our elementary schools are way overcrowd- ed, with the district adjusting boundaries, adding portable class- rooms and even remodeling schools to accommodate students, Ronnenkamp said. The district opened two new elementary schools this fall, and with their addition, Right now were in .. pretty good shape. Davis is not facing the same problems as the Granite School District, whose numbers fell so sharply theres a chance some teachers jobs may be in jeopardy. No, theres no chance of that happening, Ronnenkamp said. knowing each other, said Gregory. Farmington's City Council has a full page list of expectations for the new chief. Top on their list is to increase fire prevention and inspection services as well as to increase and improve the training and fire fighter certification among department members. Other city developing objectives include long-rang- plans for e coverage; increasimproving ing recruitment for new fire fighters; and improve the overall image and professionalism of the department. day-tim- e Henry Klein, m.d.
