Show Davis County Clipper AroundDavis Tuesday, November 23, 2004 Influenza vaccine restrictions lifted BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer - SOUTHEAST OF CONFERENCE CENTER, new building will include two restaurants, business offices. k Gam happy with center, new building BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor - Dust on the county's new LAYTON Conference Center hardly seems to have settled, and already ground is due to be broken in less than two weeks for a new restaurantoffice building nearby. Kevin Gam of KSG Properties says a t, y building should see an early spring completion on 2.2 acres southeast of the Conference Center and adjacent Hilton Garden Inn both projects he and partners were heavily involved in. Rooster's, an Ogden restaurant-brepub that has helped revitalize that citys downtown 25th Street, will be one of the two restaurants that will anchor the ground floor. Gam said. They do a tremendous business he said. They know how to cater to the conference business. One request from people who go to conferences is, they want to be able to go to a brew pub. This will provide e an facility within easy walking dis28,000-square-foo- two-stor- w on-sit- tance.. The plot of ground actually was sold by the county to Gam and adjoins the Conference Centerhotel. Garn said negotiations are not yet finalized with a second restaurant, but he characterized it as a steak house and seafood. CVB which will have an open (to public viewlike Prime ing) kitchen Flemings Steakhouse (national upscale chain with a Salt Dike City location) Offices for professional business staff will be leased, with the building's exterior featuring stacked rock, (early 1900s) lighting' a style Gam said to his knowledge will be new to Davis County. Dan J. Vanzeben of Eden is the architect. Sahara Construction of West Bountiful is the contractor. The building is another example of Gam's commitment to Layton and North Davis. "In the short term, the Hilton Garden Inn will probably hurt the other hotels he said. "It takes a certain amount of time to add this much (new rooms) to a (relatively) little market, but then in the long term, as the Conference Center hits its stride, the other hotels will follow" in filling back up. I think everybody is going to benefit, he said of the Conference Center. It was a big job getting that center open but he and Davis Convention & Visitors Bureau CEO Barbara Riddle agree that the area is doing well in terms of hotel occupancy rates. The area (North and South Davis) has the Salt Lake consistently County area, in temis of percentage of rooms on average that are filled. Of the Hilton Garden Inn, he said that for this size of community it's exceptional, great to have in a small community. We had a great month he said of October, noting projections look on target, with "really strong" occupancy to meet expectations in November, as well. It was a risk, especially with having a cloud over Hill Air Force Base. That was a huge consideration. I believe HAFB will emerge stronger after the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission in 2005) he said. I le praised both the CVB and Conference Center staff, calling them excellent. They know what theyre doing, understand the vision. Gam owns properties from an assisted-livin- g center in Digan to similar facilities in Utah County as well as four hotels in Diyton. I le was due to break ground last Friday on 55 senior condominiums in Taylorsville. I love the community I live in. I've always tried to make it better Garn said. I spent 12 years in the Legislature (including time as I louse Majority Lxader). Those were years I was giving back to the community. This area has been great to me, its been profitable. I want to give back. I believe what we have here is a temporary stewardship. tbusselbergdavisclipper. com adding staff, still booking rooms BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor - LAYTON Even as two new sales managers have joined the ranks of the Davis Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, the agency keeps hopping with new leads and confirmed bookings. Those bookings aren't the horse betting variety, but have to do with hotel rooms and accompanying conferences for venues throughout the county. Joe Coles began woik as a sales manager last Thursday while Brandon Barrett starts next Monday. They join Susan Liston, director of sales and marketing, who has been trying to juggle most ot that herself. "We will now be able to permeate each (type of) market. A lot of our ctldrt will be said Liston. Davis County, with its hotels ," and meeting venues, the Davis Conference Center being the largest, is considered a fourth-tie- r maiket. she said. Stall is looking primarily at attracting groups that would fill 300-40- 0 sleeping (hotel) rooms. Liston savs. rather than the thousands that the Salt Palace in Salt Dike Citv go alter. The sales stall concentrates on state level meetings for various associations or groups, such as the Northern Utah Square the used who Dancers, Conference Center eailier this month, or the Trapper Trails of Scouts Council, Boy America, based in Ogden but including North Davis, who held an auction there on the weekend of Nov. 13. The Utah Brain Injury Association is a non-prof- it group that anticipates bringing in 400 delegates, part of a national organization, Liston said. Then we see if we can go with regional groups, she continued. A lot of people look at Denver, traditionally We're focusing at meetings 14 months out (in the future)," said Barbara S. Riddle, CVB director. Were looking at the bigger picture, not just day meetings. That said, the CVB is looh-in- g at large and small gatherings. For example, Liston said that if soccer sports teams groups can be brought in. that would generate eight or 10 rooms for a team. "It would have significant impact by sheer numbers ot teams that might come in, Liston said. "We have some great venues for amateur athletics. she said, adding that not only hotel rooms, but visits to the mall and lestaurants all add up in teims of revenue generated for area businesses, tax dol lars for the economy. We're focusing on motor travel coaches, packaged Riddle continued. That means the Yellowstone and Jackson Hole travel that passes through the area on It also means golfing possibilities at one of the county's nine golf courses or Antelope Island visits, say for a duck tour, possibly including a chuckwag-o- n dinner of buffalo, etc., offered on the island. "If were (CVB) doing our job, we're sending out plenty of for future business. leads Riddle said. With lead generation in mind, Liston just returned from the National Tour Association convention in Toronto, Ont., which drew 2,000 delegates from both countries. k Far from a trip, Liston said, that involves "a full trip report on leads, its a lot of woik. Following what Riddle said, the convention will be used as a way to generate busi State FARMINGTON health officials eased flu vaccination restrictions last week, and Davis County Health Department officials say that flu vaccine now is available at its three clinics The department is especially encouraging those in high-ris- k groups to get a vaccination now. If theres anybody out there in a high-riscategory who hasn't received their flu vaccination yet, we certainly want to encourage them to go to one of our three clinic locations and get one, said Davis County Health Department spokesman Bob Ballew. But, he added, anyone 6 months and older should receive a vaccination. Some in high risk categories, including senior citizens and those with chronic conditions, postponed getting their vaccination to ensure there was enough vaccine for others in worse condition. But now, those who put off getting the vaccine need to get theirs. Ballew said those considering vaccination should still call 3 the flu hotline at on the day they plan on getting their vaccination. We dont know how long our supplies ness for a year from now, is a one shot" of that magnitude. Only one representative from the CVB ever goes to any meetkind of ing. Riddle said, with "industry partners," such as hotels, invited to attend, as well. Everything is about a return on investment' meaning if a meeting generates a lot of leads and eventual room-nigh- t, convention business, it can be considered for attendance in the future. Riddle said. tbusselbergdavisclipper. 451-333- will last. Due to recent vaccine shipments arriving throughout Utah, the LItah Department of I lealth lifted all restrictions for receiving the flu vaccine last week. In a recent assessment, the IJDOH determined that some health care providers have received additional supplies of flu vaccine sooner than anticipated. That means that many public health departments statewide and some private health care providers have received the balance of their original flu vaccine orders. Further vaccine shipments are estimated to arrive over the next several weeks and into January. Due to the great success reaching most people in the priority groups and the recent arrival of additional flu vaccine, there is no need to wait until after Thanksgiving to remove the restrictions," says Linda Abel, Immunization Program manager with the state. m williamsdarisclipper. com days in jail.
