Bountiful stayed with its starter Bodily, who held the Darts in check. Meanwhile, Bountifuls best chance to score came in the bottom of the fifth when lead off hitter Josh Thurman reached third base after a couple of Davis errors. Jacobs then walked, putting runners at first and third with two outs. Bountiful third baseman Nate Weese, batting third in the lineup, came to the plate looking to put his team ahead. A few moments earlier, in the top of the fifth. Weese had robbed Davis of a run w ith an excellent play on a smash to the left side of the infield with a Davis runner in scoring position. This time, however, it was Weeses turn to be robbed on a good play by Davis first baseman Steve Easthope, who knocked down Weeses hard-h- it ball to the right side and then d Weese to first base to end the inning. In the sixth, the Darts brought their ace reliever Hill to the' mound in relief of Sorensen. Hill pitched three scoreless innings, holding Bountiful at bay until the Darts exploded with their big inning in the top of the ninth. Easthope ignited the Davis rally with a single to right field. With the top of the order due up, Bountiful made its first pitching change of the game, ringing in Patterson in relief of Bodily, who had pitched a strong eight innings for the Braves. This time around, however, the top of the Davis batting order was not to be denied. Lead off hitter John Connors singled to me right side and No. 2 hitter Nelson followed with his third hit, a perfectly executed bunt down the third base line. Davis pinch runner, Dave Tidwell, scored on the play when the throw got away from the.Bountiful first baseman. Denham then drove in Connors with a sacrifice fly to deep right center field. Cleanup batter Hill put the nail in the coffin for Bountiful by ripping a shot down the right field line into Bountifuls infamous no fences outfield comer. Hill was easily safe at home on out-race- the inside the park home run, with Nelson scoring ahead of him. Davis threatened to score even more after a single by Buxton and a double by sophomore catcher James Taylor put runners on second and third with only one out. But Patterson pitched his way out of further trouble by striking out the next two Davis batters. Perhaps still chafing from how the Darts had mishandled him on the mound, Patterson led off the bottom of the ninth with a towering home run that landed near the top of the embankment in deep left center field. Observers estimated the shot at well over 400 feet. It was, however, too little too late for the Braves as Hill immediately took control and retired the next three Bountiful batters to secure the victory for the Davis Darts.
