However, Malone said she was sure of her figure. Firefighters say the station on Bountiful Boulevard is manned a day, but if the crews are out on other calls, they must take care of them first. At the time of the blaze, one crew from the station was out on an ambulance cal!, a second crew was on detail at the Bountiful Recreation Center. The first crew to arrive on the scene Thursday was from another fire station. We responded immediately. There was no delay in response time, said Barfuss, fire investigator for the department. It took them 35 minutes to put out the blaze after they arrived. Assistant Fire Chief Mike Barfuss said tapes made of the 911 call document the time it took and city officials have reviewed those tapes. By the time you pull out cardboard, glass, paper, steel, aluminum and tin, whats there to throw out? she said, adding that even waste like grass clippings and food scraps can be saved from the trash bin and used as compost instead. "Its more of a habit than anything else. Its just retraining ourselves, she said. Recycling takes a certain mind-se- t and sometimes more work, admits Himstreet, who has been heavily involved with recycling in Bountiful for the last six years. Yet she firmly believes the advantages of recycling outweigh the inconveniences. Principal among the benefits, she says, are extended life of landfills and conservation of natural resources which both translate into dollar signs. If we dont plan and recycle now. its just going to cost us later, she said. For those who are not now recycling but would like to, Himstreet suggests this starting point: Dont throw away your newspaper. National statistics show paper takes up 40 percent of the country's landfills, making it a big contributor of waste. Yet it's perhaps the easiest waste to avoid. Several newspaper collection bins are available in town, including the citys bins at 950 S. 200 West, where aluminum, tin, glass cardboard and plastic also can be deposited. Waste Management, a private company, also offers a curbside recycling service in Bountiful. Other suggestions are: Store some boxes in your garage into which you can separate Get the family involved. Think of recycling when you recy-clable- RECYCLE eery bill for using sacks again. Don't waste products. At a fast food restaurant, for instance, only take as many napkins and packaged condiments as you need. Don't request plastic utensils when you can use your own. Reduce the amount of paper coming into your home by writing to companies that send unwanted junk mail and have them take you off their mailing lists. Learn how to use grass clippings, organic kitchen waste and other materials in a compost pile. If looking at dollars, it's either pay now or pay later" in the form of higher garbage fees and costlier natural resources, she said. Plus, she believes that many people who now can use more than one e could offset the cost of a curbside program if they recycled and reduced their waste enough to not require another can. The charge for a second can is $2 a month. Likewise, she thinks the city could support a curbside recycling program by charging the same for a second garbage can as it does the first. city-wid- It's Otherwise, recycle, a disincentive to Himstreet said. program a money loser in Bountiful. That's why Bountiful Citizens for Recycling want to assess whether residents would support a program. "Why use the landfill up quicker than we need to?" Thacker asked. We can contribute to the welfare of our children by recycling. An average of 1(X) tons of material go into the landfill every day (more material in summer than winter), said Mark Franc, an environmental engineer for Bountiful City. This 100 tons per day figure, which is the basis for computing the life expectancy of the landfill, has "stayed quite constant the past few attribute that to years." Franc said. recycling."
