About a year ago city fathers began looking at options to create more green space within city limits and at creating a buffer zone between the airport and residential areas. One of the possibilities they discussed was that of a golf course a plan which was taken to heart by Hicks, who has since met with developers, architects and businesses to explore the idea. He has even received a commitment from Maverick Oil to donate land for three holes to the project, should it become more than a consideration. Tuesday night Hicks told the council what he has learned and heard from another who has a similar dream of turning a family farm into a golf course. Theres a number of reasons to entertain the idea of a golf course, none related to golf, Hicks told the council. The number one reason is to provide the city with needed green space. The second, he said, is because the land is going to be developed into something. Its not golf course to work, all the land would have to be donated. He believes the cost of improvements and building the club house could be offset by greens fees. But if the city has to purchase land, the dream will not come true. Hicks is philosophical about the project. If it doesnt fly Im OK with that, he said. He estimates a golf course will require a minimum of 160-17- 0 acres, but up to 300 acres would be better. The vision here is immense, he said. But he realizes the idea is just that for now. If it happens it would be a huge coup for the city. Its just this side of possible Hicks said the second best use for the land would be linear parks. But if theyre created, theyll require maintenance by the citys public works department, and if the citys budget go by the wayside. Hicks estimates the total cost of the project would be $8.5 million.
