Photos document LDS Church in Salt Lake museum's exhibition An exhibition of the work of over 40 world-renowne- pho- d tographers documenting the people, places and practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints opened September 29 at the Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City. It is the first time we have done a photo exhibit on the contemporary international Church, says Museum director Glen Leonard. But perhaps the most unique element of the exhibit, he adds, is that it features entirely the work, and perspective, of individuals from outside of the Church. Three thematic sections will display nearly 60 images of family, missionary work and lifestyle. In addition, a synchronized slide show and video presentation will explore views of the project itself, which took 42 of the worlds leading photojournalists, including three Pulitzer Prize winners, on a journey of visual discovery around the globe and resulted in a collector-qualit- y book. We really needed the support Saint community of the Latter-da- y to do this, he adds. We needed them to open their homes and their lives and their ceremonies to us, and they did. The exhibit opened free of charge to the public at the Museum of Church History and Art on Friday, September 29 and runs through January 14, 1996. Volunteers are at the heart of the success of the museum and its programs, said Jennifer Lund, museum educator. They help us keep our doors open every day by providing services to our visitors with enthusiasm and genuine caring. Yet we always need more volunteers. We have openings for people with a variety of skills and interests in Church history, art, humanities, education, and in working with people. The Museum has an immediate need for volunteers to serve as docent tour guides. An intensive, training program will prepare volunteers to give tours, present gallery talks, and take outreach programs into the public schools. Classes will begin in January and will include sessions on Church history, art, the museums exhibits and collections, and group tour teaching techniques. Tour guides in the museum r shift a week serve one on weekdays, evenings, or Saturdays. We have a special need for additional volunteers to serve on Saturdays, said Lund. It is our busiest day of the week with many tour groups and casual visitors, and it is hard to find enough Saturday volunteers to provide tours and other services, she continued. Saturday volunshirt teers serve one four-hothan rather other week, every six-we- work schedules. Other volunteer needs in the museum include individuals who are interested in greeting visitors and answering questions at the museums information desk, individuals who can assist in the museum gift shop, individuals who can play the role of a pio- neer in the museums Pioneer Profiles program, and volunteers who assist staff members in various assignments, such as cataloging or cleaning artifacts. These assignments all require a commitment to one four-hoshift per week.
