Show tgEfr. Personal histories help connect families Part five and six of a 10-pa- rt series Sharing and Recording Personal History: Among the earliest evidences of human culture is the written word. Interestingly, one of the oldest known documents, Pepis s Papyrus, is a letter entitled Instructions to a Son. A father telling a story to a child, says family therapist Dr. David C. Dollahite, is one of the most powerful and meaningful ways to connect fathers and Paternal Principle 6: Tell your stories, and encourage your children to record theirs. Application: Stories touch the deeper chords of human existence, says Dr. Wesley R. Burr. They are one of the central pillars of what it means to be a human. Burr and his colleague. Dr. Terrance D. Olson, professors of family sciences at Brigham Young University, say storytelling is perhaps the most effective vehicle known for transmitting not only knowledge, but values to subse- quent generations. And stories from your' own life may be the most important stories your children could possibly hear. Its important for fathers to tell their children stories of when they were young, agrees Dollahite. To tell their children the most important occurrences of their life, about when they weathered difficult times and how they did it, about what was the anchor that allowed them to get through difficult times. Children learn about the soul of their fathers from the stories that he tells them. And resist the temptation, says Burr, to think that your experi ences are of no value to your children. Writer David Bishop uses the example of Laura Ingalls Wilder to illustrate the point. Her work is generally ignored until bedtime, says Bishop. Certainly, a person who never graduated from anything and lived on a Rocky Ridge could scarcely be expected to make profound observations on society. That she chose to think and write, rather than march and fight, sealed her fate in the childrens section of American literature. Yet Wilders musings. Bishop reminds us, are among the and most widely published influential childrens stories of the 20th Century. Likewise, however, children can learn about themselves by recording their own experiences, triumphs and trials. Encourage your children to write their beliefs, experiences, dreams, ideas and life history, says Dollahite. And once again, he says, The best way for parents to teach is by example. As once noted by German essayist Jean Paul Richter, What a father says to his children is not heard by the world, but it will be heard by posterity. Misstainisiiries' ELDER SKELTON Elder Andy H.
