M hi Hs lit Our Opinion t KWT1AIKT0 No Independence those held prisoners of abuse Day for Today is Independence Day, a day when as Americans we celebrate the freedoms that are guaranteed by our Constitution. As we gather round our families in backyard barbecues we have freedom of choice. We can have a hot dog or a hamburger. We can have it plain or with the works. We can play with sparklers or we can watch. We can arrive when we want to and go home when we are ready. We can drive to our: homes in a car of our choice. It can be a Ford or a Chevy, no one cares. There are no rules which tell us what to drive. We have no curfew imposed by the state. We are free. These are simple freedoms. Some that we dont even think about. To us these are every day life. They are really no big deal. Thats just life in America. But for some Americans this carefree life that we have grown accustomed to is not available. Today, throughout America, there are thousands of terrified prisoners cowering in their own homes waiting for their captors to strike. When the young American pilot was recently shot down over Bosnia, the entire nation watched, waited and prayed for his safe return. The television cameras were there when the hero returned home to freedom. During the Vietnam War we mourned as a nation when we knew that our brothers and sisters were being held captive and tortured behind enemy lines. Today those men and women who returned from those horrors are our heroes. But many of our brothers and sisters are still being held prisoners. Their abusive; spouses or parents hold them in their grip. They have convinced them they have no value without their captors. These survivors will never be known to us. Their faces dot our classrooms and our society. They will never be heralded as heroes. We will never see them on television. But each day they fight to stay alive in a hostile environment. Freedom is guaranteed for all, not just the war heroes. Each man, woman and child has the right to be free. Free from verbal and physical abuse. For those who are living in these relationships its time to get help. For those of you who know of these relationships it's time to get involved and give help. Its time for us as a nation to rescue all of our prisoners. If you are an abused teen, an abused child, an abused spouse tell someone. Tell a neighbor, a friend, a clergyman. Keep telling until someone listens. Help is available. You are valuable. You are guaranteed the same freedoms by our Constitution as any other citizen. If you are living in an abusive relationship analyze your life and you will understand that your staying has not solved the problem. You cannot be good enough, thin enough or clean enough to stop the abuse. Your abuser is not cured because you keep a secret. The only way to end the cycle is for you to tell. You cannot solve the problem alone. Millions of men women and children relinquish their freedom for decades as they cower under the heavy hand of an oppressor who needs professional help. Its time for America to free all of her captives. The abused must tell, and we must listen, let this be Independence Day for all of us. God Bless America. Land of the Free. smms fSKS YOU TOGO 80MBVHEIS WITH THEMr mmor rSEKTOfclWttfTIn uTHK-jf.- . MKQ1 Provo mayor not elected to bring back Crusades On the day before the past Thanksgiving, a Salt Lake City radio announcer quipped that we should bow our heads and offer thanks. And if you cant think of anything to be thankful for, he joked, you can always give thanks that you dont live in Provo. His joke has now been validated by the Provo mayor who has made national news (and brought unwelcome attention to his city) by issuing an edict that Sunday swimming will not be allowed at the city pool. Along with turning neighbor against neighbor and church against church, Mayor Stewart apparently appears to be relishing his time in the spotlight. I wasnt elected to be popular, he said last week. 1 was elected to ROBERT S. DAVIS Davis County Sheriff do whats right. Very eloquent bleatings were spewed out of Third Reich! As far as I can tell, the voters in Provo elected their mayor to oversee road repair, garbage collection and water flow, not bring back the Crusades and try to convert the heathen. Just think: In May, a West High student tries to tell the rest of the school choir what songs they could sing. One month later, a city mayor is telling adults when they can don their swimming trunks! Whats next on Mayor Stewarts agenda? Banning the use of two-piebathing suits and smiled at the suggestion and told her colleagues that if a Sunday closing were mandated it was also appropriate to close all other recreational facilities technically speaking, Jo Ellen isnt a mother. The mere mention of shutting off a tee time brought the whole discussion to a close, much to the glee of Councilwoman Southwick. Of course. Mayor Stewart tried to close the golf course too. It was only when he failed that he shifted his attention to the unholy at the swimming pool. And rather than hiding behind the accountants and making an economic case for Sunday closing, Mayor Stewart makes no bones about his convictions. My personal and religious beliefs say that we should provide a day of rest for our citizens, he said last week in a radio interview. Thus, he said, he had the right to make an administrative order reflecting the standards of my community. spokesman sensibly responded, Its not governments responsibility to force a day of rest on anyone. Cities obviously have the right to regulate the opening and closing hours of properties. But prior to Mayor Stewarts election, there was no raging debate over Sunday swimming. There were no reports of citizens marching on City Hall. There was no public clamor that Steve Young be dethroned as the citys favorite son since he played football on Sunday ' ' noons. Jo, the controversy was fashioned iirtely by Mayor Stewart who presumably likes to hear the sound bites from his own interviews. Mayor Stewart should be held responsible for creating the divisiveness in his city. As penance, I suggest he be locked into a room with others who try to inflict their views on everyone else. Mayor Stewart should be locked up with the Bauchmans! Mayor commu- nity standard is already the swimming pool in Provo d: has traditionally been open on Sunday. Therefore, Stewart is not trying to uphold a community standard hes defiantly trying to set a new one.
