Jan. 21, 1994 ll "Davis County is How would Davis County fare against a mqjor earthquake along the Wasatch Front?: due for some kind of shaking." -- Mike Lowe In local geological circles it is BOUNTIFUL called The Big One" an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale occurring e somewhere along the long Wasatch Fault. And when not if one happens, experts say it could be devastating for Davis County. The Wasatch Fault stretches from Levan to 180-mil- Brigham City, through the most densely populated areas of Utah. Geologists say a major earthquake. 7 to 7.5 on the Richter Scale, occurs somewhere along the fault line every 400 years. The last such quake happened about 350 years ago between Mona and Nephi. So experts insist that the state is due for the next one. bast'd on an earthquake of 7.3 magnitude which would rckase 30 times the ertergv of the 6 6 quake that recently rocked Southern California Its been almost 400 years since the last major event, so it's highly likely there wdl be a major event in the Wasatch Front Zone in the very near future," said Utah Geological Survey geologist Mike Lowe. There is a 13 percent chance that a 7.5 magnitude earthquake will occur along the fault during the next 50 years: 25 percent probability within the next 100 years, according to projections compiled by state and federal emergency management experts. The probability of a 7.5 magnitude quake occurring in Davis County, which is situated on the Weber Segment of the Wasatch Fault, is somewhat less. But the probability oL smaller quakes is very likely. There has been a lot of speculation if I'm going to run again, and I just want to put all the rumors to rest, said Clary, explaining why he was making his intentions known so far in advance of the election. Clary, 63. has 36 years of law enforcement experience, beginning in 1957 as a patrol officer in Sunset. That service also includes stints with the Davis County Sheriff s Department, 18 years with the Orange County Sheriff s Department in California, and eight years as Riverdale police chief. Students at Farmington Junior High School, some homeless people, immigrants and others were asked what they thought the year would bring. Students in Richard Bundersons American History classes at Farmington Jr. High had some definite and deep thoughts about the future. The classes had been talking about President George Washingtons decision over whether to back the English .or the French in Canada Students said they study American history because history tends to repeat itself and by studying the past they could understand the future. So what were their predictions for 1994? They felt that Boris Yeltsin would lose power while they were more positive about President Clinton. One student said he felt as the President gets more experience the President see "CLARY pg. 3 will get better at the job. Janet Reno, they believed, will become more popular.
